frequently asked questions
Q: Where will the session be?
A: I am, primarily, an on-location photographer. This means that I come to you. That can mean your house, your yard, your favorite park, that really great building down the street – the options are numerous! There are also plenty of photographic opportunities throughout downtown Providence if you want a more urban feel. I am also what is referred to as a natural light photographer which simply means that I don’t use studio lights. Does it mean that I don’t use a flash? No. There are situations where a little flash helps so you might see me use one. But I much prefer the regular, natural light of the great outdoors, even if it’s through a window. I do have a studio here in Cumberland but that is mainly used for client meetings and select newborn sessions and mini sessions.Q: We don't have a magazine style home, what do you do with that?
A: This is something I hear a LOT from clients! It is not at all a problem no matter what your home looks like. I have been in mansions and I have been in teeny studio apartments. I have clients who decorate from Restoration Hardware and clients who have homes full of hand me down furniture and decor. I’ve even done sessions in unfinished / undecorated homes! As long you YOU are there, that is what is important. I have started telling clients – all you need is a window, a wall or two and maybe a bed or couch. We can (and will!) make it work, I promise. If you are adamant that we not use your home for a newborn session, I am more than happy to accommodate you in my studio here in Cumberland.Q: How do we book a session?
A: Click on the contact me section and fill out the contact form. This is sent to my email address and I will respond as soon as possible. First, we set up a time to get talk, either on the phone or, ideally, in person at my studio where you can see and hold all of the products I offer. From there we will decide on a date for your session and I will send you the link to your forms. You will fill out the forms and pay the session fee within five business days and your date will be booked.
Q. Can I book just a maternity session?
A: Absolutely, clients are welcome to book any session as a standalone! All regular pricing applies (session retainers and print and product pricing). There is, however, significant financial saving when booking your maternity in conjunction with your newborn session. For that I offer a flat-rate maternity add-on for $500. This add-on includes a mini maternity session at a location of your choosing, 10-12 high resolution images via download and a set of 5×7 reference prints.Q: How long does a session last?
A: The session will last anywhere from one to two hours with as many stops as are needed for food or diaper / bathroom breaks, especially with young children.
Q: So we've finished the session. Now what?
A: After your session, I go home and choose the best of the best from your session. This usually results in 30-35 unique images. I edit those images fully in both color and black and white and get everything ready for you. After that point, we will meet again for the best part – your image reveal and ordering session! This normally takes place in my studio here in Cumberland but can also take place in your home. You will see a slideshow of your images that I have prepared for you and then we go through all of the images individually, putting together your order, designing wall art, albums, and other products as needed.
Q: How much should we expect to spend?
A: My clients tend to invest between $1500 and $3500 dollars per session.
Q: What is my style?
A: As I said my welcome, I photograph sessions with five things in mind – life, laughter, love, emotion and family. Because of my approach, I am much more of a photojournalistic photographer. You won’t see people perfectly posed too often in my galleries. However you will see families swinging their children, kids running, lots of snuggles, kisses, laughter and lots of smiles. I love the moments and the emotions of kids and families interacting. Never fear, there will always be images in each session in more of a traditional New England portrait style, but overall I love capturing families being families and kids being kids.Q: What time are sessions held?
A: Family sessions are held on Saturdays and select Sundays either in the early morning or late afternoon. Newborn sessions can be booked on weekdays only. With the exception of newborns, sessions are not held midday.
Q: What should we bring to the session?
A: You should bring anything you think will make the session better! This can be small bribes for those not-so-willing toddlers such a fruit snacks, puffs for a baby and drinks for break time. Also bring toys for smaller children, especially ones that make noise. I will use these both to get their attention for pictures and let them play with it if they get fussy. If we are going to be outside somewhere, feel free to bring a blanket, but make sure the blanket is a solid color so as not to compete with the subjects (you!) in the photo. And of course, bring diapers and a change of clothes just in case.
Q: How do we order prints and products?
A: Ordering is done at your image reveal and ordering session. This session takes place in my studio in Cumberland and lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. After thirty days, any images that were not ordered will be permanently deleted. All ordered images are kept for one year.
Q: I live out of state, do you travel for sessions?
A: Absolutely! All travel costs are the responsibility of the client, including airfare and hotel and the client must pre-purchase my full digital collection. I do also offer an option where clients may work together in groups of families for discounted costs. Please contact me if you are interested in having me travel to your area for a session!
