Newborn Sessions

Amy Ro is a Rhode Island based photographer specializing in beautiful, natural light, in-home, lifestyle newborn portraiture, as well as maternity, babyand family portraiture throughout Rhode Island and into Boston, other areas of Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

I know just how very quickly those first few weeks go by with a baby, and I pride myself on being able to give clients beautiful images that capture all of the details, big and small, of that oh-so-fleeting period of time.  Alongside just the still images, however, custom films are created for every client fusing still and video into beautiful pieces of art.

Take a peek at two typical newborn session films below:

My style combines traditional newborn photography with intimate images of newborns and families in their homes. My love of capturing new families in their surroundings shines through in my work which features a mix of traditional baby-only images as well as images with family throughout the home. You are just as likely to see a baby swaddled on the bed as you are a beautiful portrait of a new mother cradling her baby in her arms in the nursery. Clients love the personal, boutique feel of a session with me, and love the fresh approach I bring to newborn photography.  My goal at your newborn session is to provide you with beautiful, one-of-a-kind images of your precious new baby and your family.  After eleven years of photographing newborn sessions, and three children of my own, I am very comfortable working with newborns and have also received training in the proper and safe handling and posing of them.

RECENT NEWBORN SESSIONS

Newborn sessions traditionally are done within the first two weeks, however, with my more lifestyle approach to sessions, it is very easy to go up to four weeks of age with newborns.  All sessions are done in the comfort of your home and I bring everything that I need with me – you need to do nothing other than be home.  I will arrive at your house with my beanbag, blankets, hats, and a various assortment of other accessories that I will need during the course of your session.  (And you are always welcome to contribute special items to the session as well!)  Once we start, my newborn sessions typically last two to three hours and you will receive a sneak peek on either my Facebook Page or blog that very same day.  Please contact me with any questions – I look forward to photographing your brand new baby!

Newborn Sessions FAQs

When should I schedule my newborn session?

Newborn sessions are best done within the first two weeks of the baby being born. I prefer between six and ten days simply because they are still usually very sleepy and very easy to work with. That being said, however, due to my style, newborn sessions can be done anytime within the first three or four weeks.  When you schedule your maternity session or just your newborn session, you’ll tell me when you are due and we will make a tentative session date for a date following your due date. Obviously, as babies don’t like to follow schedules, we will adjust as needed. Once the baby is born, you simply call or email me to let me know and we will go from there!

Where will the session be held?

Most of my newborn sessions are held in the client’s home. I prefer your home because then we can incorporate parts of your house into the photos if you wish – whether it be the sentimental piece of art in your living room or the great rocking chair that you have in your nursery. I also love to use parents’ beds so, really, be open to me taking pictures in any room once I get there! And of course we can clean around things as we go. No one expects a house with a newborn to be spotless!  If you are adamant that your home not be used, I do have a studio here in Cumberland that is available for use.

How long will the session take?

I allow extra time for newborns, so the sessions are a little longer than others. Newborn sessions can take between two and four hours because I really like to relax and take my time with the families, the babies, and the images. We may also need extra time to get the baby to fall asleep or for feedings.

How can we best prepare for the session?

There are so many tips and tricks that I have gleaned over ten years of doing newborns.  I have put them all together in a very handy newborn welcome packet that you will receive after your session is booked.  No worries – we will get you all set and taken care of!!

What should we wear?

For newborns – nothing! A diaper can work if you have a diaper cover, or if you use plain cloth diapers. We will also do pictures swaddled in blankets and using any hats or booties that you may want. For mom and dad I recommend either white or black shirts and jeans or other pants – very flattering on a new mother and provides a beautiful backdrop for pictures.

Is there anything else we should know?

Only that I ask that you trust me with your child. I understand the difficulty in handing over a new baby to someone you do not know. You also may not always see the picture I see in my head, but if we work together we can get some amazing images that you will treasure for years to come.

What happens after the session?

After the session I go home and choose the best images from our session.  This is always a minimum of 30 images.  Then I fully edit all of the images, doing both a color and black and white edit. While I am at your home for the newborn session we will set up a date for your ordering session, which takes place within three weeks of your session.  On that date you will come to my studio in Cumberland, or I will return to your house, and we will view your slideshow, all of your images and I will assist you  in putting your order together.  Please note, there is no online gallery or ordering.
