What to Wear – Family Outfits Coordination | RI Family Photography

You’ve booked your photography session – fantastic!! Now comes the hardest part other than deciding what to order after you’ve seen your beautiful images. What on earth are you and everyone else going to wear for your family outfits???

**Note for maternity sessions head to my two maternity what to wear posts:
General Maternity Tips
Summer Maternity Session Tips

My Amy Ro Photography clients have the option of using a wonderful styling site that I provide to them, but in case you don’t, here are a few general useful tips.

My starting point when choosing outfits is to choose who in the family is the hardest on themselves in images. Who is the pickiest? I will say that 90% of the time, from what I have seen in both my family and newborn photography sessions, that is mom. As moms we pick and pull apart the teeniest things about ourselves. We just do. So therefore, if you are mom reading this, I want you to pick the outfit you feel the MOST beautiful in before picking a single other thing.

Once you have selected who is the pickiest, think carefully about where you are going to be doing the photos. Outfits at a beach should have a very different feel and look to them than ones done in a city or in a studio setting. Decide whether you want to be more neutral in your tones or more colorful. Normally you can look at the decor in your home to give you an idea of what you’re more drawn to.

If you choose neutrals, great! Neutrals are easy to combine. Creams and ANYTHING pretty much work well together. And it’s easy to add a pop of color somewhere as well. Moreover, it will match no matter what setting you’re in. Unless that’s Antarctica. That won’t go. 😉

We all tend to know what colors we look good in. (And what we don’t look good in.) But when it comes to picking schemes for the everyone it can be…overwhelming. In general you want colors of the family outfits to blend / to match / to coordinate. This does NOT mean all show up in white shirts and khakis (please pretty please don’t!!) A good super simple place to start is a color wheel, like below. Opposite colors are complimentary. Colors right next to each other are analogous. And within one “wedge” are variations of the same color

So once you have an idea of what color you’d like to do for your family outfits, you can use that color wheel to help pick other colors! And when in doubt, head right over to Pinterest. There are a millllllion color grouping suggestions on there. I saw several just doing a quick look for “what to wear family photography sessions.”

Once you have decided on your color palette, make sure all of the outfits go together in terms of dressiness or casualness . Don’t have someone in a suit coat and slacks and someone else in denim shorts and a tee shirt. You want the family outfits to have the same general feel for everyone in the photos. Overall you want to make a cohesive family group.

Going back to what I said earlier, once this is allll decided, go back to that original picky person we talked about. Pick an outfit for that person and everything else will fall into place. If the main person is wearing a print you can pull coordinating colors from that print for other members of the family. If the main person is wearing solid colors you can echo that color in accessories (bowties, hats, scarves, necklaces, shoes!) for others or choose a print that has those colors.

I promise, the outfits can be overwhelming at first but if you follow these tips, it will get much less so. And when all is said and done, run it by me, or by your photographer! I LOVE to be involved in the clothing selection. Choosing the right clothes can take your images from nice to gorgeous, and take you from happy to thrilled.

And isn’t that the ultimate goal?

A Family of Three | East Greenwich Family Photographer

I met the Tiller family while traveling to Dallas for a conference. Occasionally I available for travel outside Rhode Island upon request depending on my schedule that month. It’s so exciting when I’m asked to travel simply because someone loves my work even though I’m not as close to them as other photographers!

You can view their session video at the blog link below!

Dallas Love

I knew Autumn, in the beautiful pink dress, from a physicians’ spouse group. We met for the first time on this day! It was a super warm day but we found the perfect spot at a very large park to have some fun while I captured their sweet interactions. It’s important to me to photograph your family just being. Laughing, playing, cuddling. Those are the precious memories you’ll want to remember. The Tiller family did not disappoint with their love for one another. You could feel the love they have for their son, Dev; their pride and joy!

Here are some of my favorite images from their family portrait session!

Clovis’ Newborn Session | Holliston Massachusetts Newborn Photographer

This is the B family’s third child and the third newborn I’ve photographed for them. When mom, Chelsea, contacted me to book for the third time I was over the moon excited! I offer in-home newborn photography. That means I travel to a family’s home with everything I need for family, parent, sibling and baby portraits. I bring items to photograph your baby on soft, beautiful fabrics for their solo portraits, as well as other important items I might need during your session. You get to stay home while I document your family in the most special place.

The Bailow family have such a beautiful home, this makes for even more stunning newborn photos! We used their same home for all three newborn sessions so I was very familiar with the best lighting and rooms. It’s been such a blessing watching their family grow! Working with the same photographer as your children grow up means your kiddos get to know me, thus making them more comfortable around me!

Big brothers, Maren and Jack, were excited to have a new baby brother to protect and cuddle. I find in-home sessions to be so much easier for children. They get to be in their own environment, and when their portion of the session is over they get to go play or have a snack. Parents seem to love it!

When I traveled to Dallas a few weeks ago for the conference I was attending, I also had the extreme fortune of photographing this beautiful little family.  Although it was 85 bajillion degrees, we found a perfect little spot in the middle of a large park.

There was a ton of smiling and laughing throughout the session, and their love for each other and their little boy just shone so brightly.

Those first few hours and days after your baby is born go by in a blur – I should know because I’ve done it three times.  My memories from that period of time with each of my children are a bit fuzzy but I do remember being just absolutely overwhelmed with feelings of happiness and love (and yes, a bit of sleeplessness as well).  The baby there in the bassinet, the burrito swaddle magic that the L&D nurses could do in their sleep, that sweet newborn smell as I kissed their heads, seeing my husband hold our children…  I remember all of that.  I also remember how very quickly each baby changed.  Even in those first few days, they were so different – they seemed to change by the hours.  Fresh 48 sessions offer a way to document all of those moments for families – those very fresh new baby memories – after your labor and birth, but before a traditional newborn session.  While they are typically done within the first 24-48 hours, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that push it to third or fourth day.  Either way, it’s absolutely a beautiful way to document everything from those precious beginning days.

Thank you to Courtney and Josh for inviting me into their first few days with Logan…
