Sunday Morning at the Park | Philadelphia Family Photography

I met up with S. and her adorable daughter K. for some photos Sunday morning.  We got a great early start in the parks right around 3rd and Walnut – what has become my favorite part of the city for photographs.  We had so much fun running and singing and dancing and taking pictures with little bear and kitty, and I loved watching and capturing the interaction between these two.  From sloppy kisses to coming up with crazy sayings to make each other laugh you can just see the love between this mommy and daughter.  So S. and K. I hope you had as much fun as I did — and K. – KETCHUP IN BETWEEN YOUR TOES!!!!!

Paper and Ink
Every girl should have some pretty stationery.  Or personalized cards, announcements, etc.  This is what Mary Carstens of Paper and Ink Studio specializes in.  I have known Mary for over two years now from a photography board that we are both on and got to hang out with her in Vegas for a few days as well. Not only is she a cool person, she is a VERY talented person and her work is absolutely gorgeous.  She puts together all invitations and announcements by hand, lines envelopes, etc. I ordered some notecards from her a little while ago and they are absolutely gorgeous. (Which reminds me, I need some more!) If you are looking for a beautiful, unique gift, or need announcements or invitations or the newly popular “call me cards”, I highly highly recommend her work. As an added bonus if you click HERE there is a code for 10% off!

My first official weekend back – two cute cutie-pies back to back…how could I not post something from that??  I just couldn’t help it!  So until the real sneak peeks, these will just have to suffice 😉

Today it’s all about being green.  I happen to know the woman who started this company through a photography board I am on and these “eco-chic” reusable bags are FABULOUS.  In a time when everyone is trying to be a little more environmentally friendly, why not be stylish while you’re doing it? These are great HUGE shopping bags. Use them at the grocery store, the market, Ikea, whatever. The best part? They are sold in sets of two and offer four different designs. Visit www.gracen.com for more info 🙂

My boy and another tip.

I rarely get good photos of my son.  Everyone else’s son, yes.  Mine, no.  It is a classic case of PKS – Photographer’s Kid Syndrome.  But I have discovered the trick – get together with OTHER photographers and he will be a perfect angel.  Saturday morning I did just that and it allowed me to capture this lovely which I plan to print huge for my wall.

This photo also provides the perfect opportunity to give another photography tip.  While I will often tell people to get down on the subject’s level for good photos, at times this can prevent good light in the eyes.  If there is no good light in the eyes, especially in dark eyes like my son’s, the picture loses some “oomph” and can look flat.  You always want light in the subject’s eyes.  A great way to prevent this is to get the person to look up towards light.  What shows up are called “catchlights.”  Catchlights are good.  Catchlights are your friend.  And what’s extra cool about them is if you have a nice sharp photo with catchlights, you can see yourself in their eyes if you zoom in. In fact you can see the whole setting as I’ve shown in the second photo.  I’ll even throw in an extra tip – the ideal way to do this is to put your subject in nice even shade (like the shade of a building on a bright day) and have them look up towards the sky.

Cool, huh? 🙂
