I had grand plans for today.  My plan was to get lovely pictures with MY kids this weekend.  Actually jump in front of the camera and allow photos of me to be taken.  Then Matt and the kids surprised me with a gift card to my salon.  So instead I thought, GREAT.  I can get rid of the grey hairs, make it all one nice rich color again and get the same fabulous cut I had last time.  Then I will jump in front of the camera and allow photos of myself to be taken.  Fast forward to this mid-morning.  And a cut that is about two inches shorter than I wanted.  That doesn’t sound too bad, until you consider that I wanted it chin length.  So take chin length and crop it up two more inches.  And add in the fact that I said it was okay to do “stacked” in the back.  That means they are going to taper your hair up a few inches.  Yeahhh.  Didn’t understand that when I agreed to it.  I say I look like a manly mushroom.  Matt is kind and says “it’s not that bad.”  I say, “yay for hair growing quickly!”   And my friends politely tell me it’s “awesome.”  I do, no matter what else, absolutely LOVE the color.  So that is the great part.  And in another six to eight weeks when it has grown out, I think I too will love it.   Lesson learned, communicate more with your stylist.  (Whom I still do love)

So yeah.  Long winded way of saying I am NOT appearing in these pictures.  At least not until I’ve had a few days to get used to a wayyy short haircut.  Instead I took Layne out with *her* new haircut for some quick snaps in the backyard.  She loves being outside and running around and she will randomly just squat down and play with dirt, pebbles, sidewalk, whatever which gives me twenty seconds of still.   God do I love this girl…

I find many things technically wrong with this photo but I just don’t care.  I love it.  Mommy goggles all around.

I was going to try to write something really sentimental and really emotional and really *me* for this slide show, but I find the words failing me for once, which Matt will tell you is a rarity.  Moms are amazing and awesome and all things wonderful.

This slide show is a celebration of some of those moms from the last twelve months.

**Disclaimer, I apologize if I missed someone, I tried really hard not to :)

1.  Okay, okay.  It’s late.  I didn’t post anything today 🙂  But I have good reason.  Today would have been the day that I posted my photos from my Jane Goodall shoot.  However, for one, I took over 600 photos that I am culling through.  And for another, I have to edit them.  And for a third, they have to go to the Jane Goodall Institute to be archived first before I can share them.  But I will share them when I can.  It’s just going to be a while.  🙂  In the meantime, however, I can say that it was AMAZING.  To be so close to someone who is such a legend in the scientific and animal world was incredible. I got to photograph a meeting between her and 25 specially selected zoo staff – they had no idea it was coming so that was very cool.  Then some other shots of her speaking to the gathered groups from her Roots and Shoots program in the New England area and then her speech to the public at 1:30.  It was a very long, very tiring day.  I came home and essentially collapsed.  But it was so so worth it.  She is incredibly inspiring and I highly recommend going to see her if you ever have the opportunity to.

2.  Today was Layne’s first haircut.  We decided we were tired of looking at Cousin It 🙂  The girl was, well, shaggy.  So we packed them in the car and took them to the local kid’s haircut joint, Snip-Its.  SUCH a cute place for kids.  Lots of bright colors, cute little characters, etc.  And at the end they put a piece of their cute hair into a machine that spits out a prize.  That is Nolan’s favorite part.   Nolan went first to show Layne how it works.  Layne, in the meantime could have cared less and was much more interested in trying to climb into the stroller with the baby in the next stall.  Then was Layne’s turn.  She sat there suspiciously, tried to take off the cape and was in general none too pleased.  Until the introduction of the bubbles.  BUBBLES!!!  From then on, honestly I don’t think she even knew she was getting a cut.  With Nolan’s first cut, he screamed bloody murder from the first minute the spray bottle water hit his head.  Layne – not a peep!  In the end, they gave her beautiful little bangs and pigtails with ribbons.  ::swoon::  She looks like such a big girl now.  We went grocery shopping afterward and with her sitting in the seat I swear she gained a year with that cut.  My favorite part, though, was that Nolan and Layne sat together for me and I captured some quick shots that make me melt.  There are some times you look at each other in a marriage and you’re like “Oh my God why did we have another??”   This is why.

3.    As I mentioned before I am accepting sessions through mid July right now.  No further news on our future yet but hopefully soon.  Just keep your fingers crossed for us!  🙂

Yes, I slightly cheated with #3.  But it’s late and my brain is tired 🙂  See you tomorrow!

I ended my work week last week with the beautiful little Miss P. and her mom and dad.  Mom had wanted some one year old shots so we met up at Roger Williams Park on Friday which turned out to be her actual birthday!  That usually doesn’t happen.  Usually I see the kids right before or right after, not on their birthday.  But her birthday it was so we set out for some photos of just her and a few family shots as well.  P. was (next to newborns) my absolute FAVORITE stage to photograph.  She is old enough to sit up and loves life and people but can’t yet run away shrieking from me walk.  So while mom and dad (and sometimes grandparents) helped to make her laugh, growl and smile, I snapped away.  It was, after two amazing newborns, an amazing toddler session.  She did phenomenally well and we were done in possibly record time which is always good – both for the subject and the photographer! 😉

Happy happy birthday sweet baby girl, I hope your party was wonderful!!!

You never know who are you going to take pictures for when you start a photography business.  You have no idea who will come into your life for the first time, or who will come back from your past.  I love this aspect of my job, just absolutely love it.  I meet so many new people and make new friends.  I see old friends in new lights.  And sometimes I reconnect with people from a distant past in ways I would never have expected.  Such was the case with Liz and Sean.  Liz was Matt’s first true love when they were both at UConn.  But as most college romances go, they went their separate ways and they grew up and fell in love with other people and got married (yay for me! 😉 ).  And then years later, Sean called me up to do some newborn photos for his wife as a gift from him.  🙂  Turns out, thanks to Facebook, she had found my work through Matt and was a big fan.  So last Thursday, I packed up my car and went off to Connecticut for their newborn session with seven day old baby J.

Now you would think that it might be uncomfortable, but it wasn’t in the slightest bit.  Liz was as sweet (and completely gorgeous) as I remember from the first time I met her and Sean was just awesome.  (I have tried to think of different words for him, but cool and awesome are the only ones that seem to come to mind.  Just a really great guy.)  I had a wonderful time with them and J. was just about as perfect as perfect can be.  And for the second day in a row, I had a newborn that was 100% perfect.  I put on hats, I took off hats.  I turned him, lifted him, moved him, he never made a peep.  And when he did wake up, he was the most relaxed, happiest baby I think I have ever possibly seen.  He would peek his eyes open, take a look around and give this half smile and snuggle in.  (I think it was my new blanket – maybe it’s even more comfortable than it looks!)  He even let me take him outside.  While we waited with baited breath for him to wail away and I snapped quickly, he was perfectly content.  So I finally got some outdoor newborn shots, including one of my favorite newborn family shots.  EVER.  You can just see in the family shot how much Liz and Sean absolutely adore their new little boy and what a perfect little family they make together.

So Liz and Sean, it was so great to see (and meet) you.  I hope it was everything you wanted it to be, I know it was for me 🙂  Enjoy your sneak peek!
