Family Love | Rhode Island Baby Photography

Ahhh, Pittsburgh.  The city of bridges, inclines, rivers and steel.  The city my father grew up in and the city that I have not yet lived in – even though this makes me the only granddaughter out of four to fail do so.  My nana and pappapp lived in the Swissvale section up through my junior year in high school so we spent quite a bit of time there.  My parents would get us out of bed at insane times in the middle of the night to drive down from Syracuse so as to avoid traffic.  We’d go down on school breaks, summer vacation and stay for about a week.  The house was always filled with the smell of pasta fagioli and pastina, which my nana made special for us (while using every available pot and pan in the kitchen 🙂 ).  We’d go to Kennywood amusement park and to the museums to see the dinosaurs.   And sometimes, if we timed it correctly, we would also have my aunt and uncle and two cousins down for a visit there.  Most Italian families are big – mine was the exception to the rule.  Only two children and four granddaughters.  So it was pretty special when we got to see them.  We also grew up far from each other.  Though in many families cousins see each other often, it would be maybe once a year that we saw ours.  So while we did see each other it wasn’t too often.

Time passed and we all grew up.  My sister ended up going to Pitt and both of my cousins moved there at various points, as did my aunt and uncle.  My older cousin, Melissa got married to a great guy (lovingly referred to as the Dutchman) and just about a year ago I found out that they were expecting their first child, a boy. Calvin James was born just over six months ago and from what I saw thanks to Facebook, was absolutely adorable.  When Melissa asked me a month or two ago who I would recommend for photos, I suggested that she fly me out instead and I would be glad to do them.  And to my absolute delight, she DID!  I arrived in Pittsburgh last Friday – the first time I had been there in over five years.  And thus began three awesome days with Mr. Calvin.  He was beyond adorable, the happiest baby I have ever seen and one of the cutest, too!  Since I had three days to shoot we did a morning shoot, an evening shoot, indoors, outdoors, clothed, nakey.  Lots of fun!!!  We also discovered this awesome rooftop garden at Carnegie Mellon with this fascinating sculpture of a French Curve that has numbers all over it.  TOO cool.  There are lots of photos in this bunch (a mere, tiny fraction of all of them!), so sit back and enjoy meeting Mr. Calvin.  I sure did 🙂

Nursery Contest VOTING!! | Rhode Island Baby Photographer

Wow!!!!  I received TWELVE awesome entries for the nursery contest – I am so thrilled!  They were all so cute and I am so excited that all of them entered that I decided to go ahead and post ALL of them here for voting!!  Below you will see the twelve choices.  I tried very hard to pick just the two best photos of each nursery and chose to leave the babies faces out of them (or block them out) since some images also feature names. Each one is numbered 1-12 and after the last nursery there is a poll in which you can choose your winner.

The winning nursery family will receive a complimentary session focusing on the baby and nursery, one 8×10 image and (2) 5×7 images from their session as well as 20% off of any additional purchases.  There is also a second place prize of $100 print credit and a 3rd place prize of a $50 gift card to Bellani Maternity.

A few ground rules:

  • You are only allowed to vote one time
  • You are allowed to tell as many people as you like, advertise it as you like, etc.  Please do NOT make any disparaging remarks about the other nurseries.  If I find out that any such thing has occurred the parties responsible will be removed from the contest
  • Voting ends on March 13th at midnight
  • Winners will be announced on March 15th

After you’ve voted here, go check out and vote in some of the other contests that the other participating photographers are having on their blogs – there were some SUPER cute nurseries out there across the country!!!!

Gorgeous Miss L | Rhode Island Baby Photography

If you follow my work, you probably remember THIS sweetie-pie newborn from a few months ago

Well this is what the gorgeous Miss L. is looking like nowadays – five and a half months later!!

I got to spend Saturday morning with her and her parents.  I had very specific ideas of what look I wanted for these photos before I even went into the session — I knew mom and dad’s bedroom had a basic white duvet cover with a beautiful wall color and I wanted to keep the pictures very simple, hence the minimalist approach (and no clothes!)  We did the majority of the photos in their room and then a few in her gorgeous nursery.

This is just a *wonderful* age to photograph.  Babies are old enough to sit up on their own (some times longer than other times 🙂 ) and are SO attentive to the world around them.  They aren’t yet afraid of the giant camera, they don’t have stranger anxiety and are SO expressive.  Next to newborns, this phase is my absolute favorite!!!   And Miss L was just a dream to work with.  So unbelievably cute – I  could have stayed there snuggling her all morning 🙂

If you are a Facebook Fan then you might have seen this last night (and if you’re not, really you should be so click HERE!)…

This is why you should forget what you feel like, forget how you think you look.  Forget that you might not have gotten three straight hours of sleep in two or three months.  Forget that you haven’t really put on makeup or had your hair or nails done in weeks or months.  Forget how tired you are.  Forget how frustrated you might be.  Forget that the house might be a mess or that you are sore from nursing or that you are upset because you can’t nurse.  Forget that you might smell like baby poop, or formula, or breast milk.  Forget that you can’t get back into your pre-pregnancy jeans yet.  Forget all of the things that are concerning or worrying or upsetting you.

And for one second, live in the moment.  Breathe in the smell of your newborn. Close your eyes and remember the moment you first saw your baby.

And when I ask, take a photo with them, I promise that you will never regret it.

I put one up on Friday, but here are a few more of the sweetheart I got to spend Friday morning with.  I showed up to do the newborn session and found a gorgeous light-filled loft awaiting me.  🙂  Love me some good lighting.  And of course a beautiful, sweet and very wonderfully tempered baby girl doesn’t hurt either!  I spent three hours with little L and we got a great variety of shots.  Asleep, awake, curled up, stretched out, lots and lots of different looks.  I had an absolutely delightful time with L. and her mom and dad (and aunt!)  Enjoy the photos of this precious little girl – what more of a perfect way is there to start a Monday morning???
