A Quick PSA on Investing in Professional Photographers

**Author’s note:  I originally wrote this as a note on my Facebook biz page.  It was very well received so I decided to post it over here as well.  There have been a few tweaks added that I thought of after the fact**

Luckily, this has not happened to me – my clients are pretty darned great. It has, however, happened to several friends of mine, including another one very recently. What is “it”? Bargain hunters. Plain and simple, people who want to negotiate pricing.  Pricing of a session fee, or prints or packages.

When you use a professional service, do you bargain with them on the pricing? When you get a teeth cleaning do you tell the receptionist that you’d like to pay the amount the dentist down the street charges instead? With the plumber do you say that you can’t afford the entire repair and can you just pay for the drain snaking part? When you go to the clothing store do you tell the cashier that you would like to pay less than what the tag says?

Get what I’m trying to say?

If not, think of it this way. You work. You are paid a certain amount. What if your boss told you that they’d like you to do the same amount/caliber of work but they don’t want to pay all of the salary that was agreed on. Would you do it? I doubt it.

When you hire a photographer to do a session for you, they are no different than any other professional service out there. NO their prices are not negotiable. NO they will not price match Joe photographer down the street. NO they will not give you a special break afterward because you have realized that you can’t really afford them. Like every professional you would hire, know the pricing ahead of time and be willing to pay it if you hire them. It is rude and, honestly, insulting to ask someone to work for less than what they are advertised as. Whether they sell their 8×10 for $20 or $200 that is their pricing. That is THEIR salary. Please don’t insult them by trying to get them to give you their work for less. Photographers are professionals, too. 🙂

And a quick note about bartering because I have done this before and I thought of it after I initially published this.  I, personally, never mind when people approach me with bartering options.  (Example I have a future client whose husband will provide me with accounting services, or will when we finally set it up)  As long as it is a fair trade of service exchanged, that is the key part.  If there is something of value that you can offer then I don’t see a problem offering for something of equal value.  But again, don’t offer something that would be worth MUCH much less – that gets back to the insulting part.  (While we’re on the subject though, any local good massage therapists out there needing some photos??  😉 )

Fresh Bellies Casting Call! | Rhode Island Maternity photography

All spots booked, THANK YOU!!

Normally, photographers do what is called a “Fresh Faces” campaign or casting call when they want to change up the images on their site.  I personally like the faces that I currently have on my site 😉  I am okay with those adorable squishy, lovable, cute faces.  But what I am looking for some new shots of are bellies.  No, not beer bellies or flat athletic bellies (because those just make me jealous – the flat ones).  I am looking for gorgeous, round, glowing maternity bellies.  I have a few different display opportunities coming up and would like some fresh bellies – even though it is one of my favorite things to shoot, I don’t see nearly as many of them as I’d like.

Before & After | Rhode Island Photography

I often have people ask me how I achieved a certain shot.  Now I will be honest – some shots take a lot more work in the editing than others!   But I thought I would do a little before and after of an easier one to show you what I did for a shot.  I’ll try and do this a little more often.  It’s fun!  🙂

For the first, shot, a picture of Jane and Brian whose GORGEOUS couples session I shot Saturday evening out at Colt State Park.  The technical details:

6:05 pm, D700 with my Tamron 90mm lens

ISO 100, f/3.2, 1/500

Behind them was open air fields with the bay and sky.  I wanted that gorgeous golden sunlight that was surrounding them.  In terms of composition I positioned myself so that they were in the bottom corner of my frame and the sun was in the top right corner. I wanted a lot of what is called negative space in the shot (part of the frame that doesn’t really have any detail) to give it the feeling of peeking in on a moment between the two of them.  I shot more into the sun because again, I wanted that flarey-goldeny-glow.  It wasn’t directly behind them, but it was to the side and behind them.  I didn’t want any details behind them other than the tree to give the shot some quiet intimacy.  Their positioning was all them.  All I did was tell Brian to sit on the wall 😉  It’s just about waiting for the right moments that you see.

On the left is the SOOC (straight out of the camera) version, on the right, the finished version.  What I did is below the photo.  Honestly, when I opened the file, I didn’t want to touch it at all because I loved it.  I loved the haze, the everything.  But I decided it needed just a little bit of “finishing” to it.

In my RAW window, I brought down exposure -.10, recovered a little bit of detail and brought down the brightness by about 15.  I could have adjusted the white balance there but I chose to save it for photoshop.

Then I brought it into photoshop.  I ran my normal workflow action which uses levels to bring up midtones and bring down shadows, then a screen layer at 30% to brighten it up a little along with a slight defog to give it a little more clarity.  It also runs a vignette around the edge of the photo.  Once that was done, I used a color balance layer to add some warmth to it.  I added yellow, a little bit of red and a smidge of magenta.  Did a very slight s-curve, ran an unsharp mask and done!  Less than two minutes of editing from start to finish.

Okey dokey.

I have delayed announcing long enough!  It’s settled – I will be returning to Philadelphia from Friday June 25-Monday June 28.  I am coming to town to do two newborn sessions for past clients (yippee!!!!!) but have decided to add slots for three family sessions ONLY.  The sessions can be Friday evening, Saturday morning or evening and Sunday morning or evening.  (For your reference morning sessions start at 9, evening sessions start between 5:00-6:00. Trust me choose the evening, the light is AWESOME.)

Five time slots, three families.  You can do a family session, a couples Love session, any kind of session (except newborn) up to four people in one family.

Just like the last time I came, these will be “Three-Quarter” sessions.  Details:

Philly Sessions – $500

45-60 minute session in downtown Philadelphia – Art Museum, Rittenhouse, Old City, etc

All digital files in high-resolution from the session.  No clue how many you will end up with in the end but it will be at least 15-20, likely more.  You will receive the color and black and white versions of each file and a print release for all files from your session.

5×7 color print of each file

5×5 layflat album featuring photos from your session

(In case you’re wondering, this would be a total value of about $1900 regularly so you guys get an awesome deal 😉 )

To book, contact me at amy@amyrophotography.com.  Half of the fee ($250) will be due to book the session, the remainder is due at your session.
