Welcoming Samantha | Rhode Island Newborn Photography

When you get married, you tend to inherit the friends your spouse had before they married you.  In a way, really, you date them along with your spouse, and then you end up in the extended family that comes with the marriage.  Two such friends that I was lucky enough to inherit just had their second baby a few weeks ago.  So this past weekend we packed up the car with all of my newborn stuff, the kids and both of us (a very tight fit in a Tucson) and headed to CT for the day for Samantha’s newborn session.  Samantha is equally as gorgeous as her big brother is handsome, and you can tell that our friends are just SO happy.  Their little family is complete.  And they are perfect.  🙂

Typically I do my newborn sessions when a baby is one to two weeks old.  Like my last post – she was seven days.  The reason for that is that after two weeks, the babies tend to wake up more and not curl as well.  Sessions are often longer and more difficult for this reason.  But I still take sessions even when the baby is more than two weeks old!!  This little guy from Sunday was close to three weeks when we did his session.  Unfortunately his mommy was turned down by another photographer for his age.  Their loss – my gain!!  Look at this little cutie!!  I mean, sure, it was more difficult.  He woke up more and was less settled and less easy to bend and pose.  But he still did great!!  🙂  So for the photographers out there, don’t be afraid of babies over two weeks!!!

Now that I have that off of my chest 🙂  Baby R was such a little love!!  He did calm down and sleep for me two different times and even when he was awake he was pretty relaxed once he had a nice full belly and when he wasn’t perfectly calm, I was able to capture wonderful mommy interaction photos.   LOVE.  As you can see, we had a great time.  I might have to add “newborns with dogs” to my offerings.  Their two dogs did great just like baby R.!!  Though granted, I am sure it was more dad’s hand signals and knowing they were going to get a treat but I prefer to think it was me.  Hahaha!

Thanks for having me out, K and M!!  It was SO great to meet you and your little guy.  Enjoy!!

J. and her husband contacted me back when she was only about 19 weeks pregnant or so and booked both a maternity and newborn session with me to document their pregnancy and their new precious baby girl.  Back on a very cold and very rainy gray December day, we did their maternity session at Roger Williams (you may remember them from THIS post.)  J. was absolutely gorgeous then at 32 weeks, so I shouldn’t have been at all surprised when their sweet baby girl came along and was just as beautiful!  I went out to their house this past Saturday for her newborn session and at all of seven days old she did GREAT!!!  In four hours, she woke up once, cried, ate and went right back to sleep after nursing.  She let me move her and pose her and do so many different things.  Now usually if the baby sleeps the entire time I can be done in about two hours.  But we just kept talking and I just kept finding more shots.  Their house provided a beautiful backdrop to photos!  And her nursery – oh my goodness gorgeous.  Hand down the prettiest I have *ever* seen.  I put in a little collage so you can see all of the hard work that was done by her mom and dad to put this nursery together.  So much love for this little girl – you could just feel it.   There are a few extras in this sneak peek for all of you with baby fever  😉

J. and J., enjoy her.  She is absolutely perfect!!!

And P.S. – in a sentimental thing for me, the one photo in here of L. laying in a wooden bowl on a table – that is my grandmother’s dough bowl from 1952.  Not a replica like so many others you see in photos.  Unfortunately, she passed away the day before this session at the age of 93.  So being able to use it here with this baby; extra extra special.

So a sneak peek for this session is LONG overdue!!!  But we were on vacation in amazing sunny and much-warmer-than-here Key West.  So it waited until today.  But to make up for it, I am putting extra shots in.  YAY!!  This little girl was just so so sweet and pretty – and her family – amazing.  So kind and loving and sweet – both with me and of course with her.  An awesome big brother, great mom and dad, and an adorable pit bull and cat ready to all welcome this sweet little girl into their lives.  They all even all sat for me for a photo hahaha!

I also became a weeeee bit obsessed with the quote above their bed.  I absolutely loved it and tried to get it in all of the family shots possible because there has just never been a more apt quote for a relationship, a marriage, a family, a life.  To give you a little peek into how my mind works when I am shooting, I even shot one shot very specifically focusing on only the quote while leaving new mom and dad out of focus below.  I knew just how I wanted to process it before I even got it off of the memory card.  And I (personally) love how it came out.  It definitely won’t be for everyone.  But it is for me  😀

Thank you, thank you M family for having me out both times  🙂  I loved meeting you guys and photographing your precious family!

I will say right off the bat that it has been difficult to narrow down proofs from this session.  And then to only pick a few for a sneak peek?!  Well, I didn’t do such a good job at that, either.  When we first set this session up (my last of three on Sunday!) mom mentioned how she would really love to have some newborn shots done as well as family shots.  The only thing was that the “newborn” was already a chunky, adorable 6 weeker.   I will admit, I was a bit worried about getting more traditional newborn shots with a baby that old, but he rocked it!!!  Little C. slept deeply and let me do some shots with his adorable 12 pound self.  So, so cute.  It definitely was not as much as a regular complete newborn session would have been, but it was fabulous. I mean look at him!  Tell me you do NOT want to squeeze those cheeks or snuggle him.  (Trust me, you want to.  I got to snuggle him!)

And can we talk about big sister and brother?  Ummm ADORABLE.  (Not to mention they had this amazing eye color!)  Third family in a row that day, third awesome set of kids.  (And more Steeler’s fans too, yippee!  We are taking over the world, you’ll see)  These two were definitely a typical brother and sister in how they interacted but when they were cute and snuggling together for a picture, my heart melted a little – and they’re not even my kids!  I am not sharing the whole family shots just in case she wants to use one for a holiday card but even mom and dad got in on the photos in the end 🙂 And then when we were done shooting, mom and I chatted for probably another 15 or 20 minutes!  Again, in the back of my mind I found myself wondering if she would think I was nuts if I arranged marriages between our families.  (At this point I think I have married my kids off ten times over each…)  What could have been a very tiring, long end to my day, was made perfect with this family and these kids.

All in all, an amazing day!
