Last Friday I got to head out to my first newborn session in over a month and the first since we had moved.  Let me tell you – it was not easy.  First I had to find all of my stuff buried in the piles of boxes, bags and STUFF that fills a just-moved-into house.  Then I had to locate the battery chargers which, for some reason, had been packed separately.  Oy.  But I got it all and set off to mister M’s newborn session.  It was definitely tough to get back into the swing of shooting a newborn but luckily M and his family made it beyond easy!!!  He was absolutely wonderful in every way and big sister was not only ADORABLE with curls to die for, she clearly adored her new baby brother.  And mom and dad were wonderful to work with – so relaxed, happy and just loving being a family of four.  Congratulations, B family – it was a pleasure meeting you and he is absolutely perfect. 🙂

I shouldn’t do newborn sessions for friends.  I really shouldn’t.  Because all I do is sit there snuggling their precious little baby and giving it all of the nuzzles and kisses I can’t give non-friend newborns.  (Because let’s face it, that would just be weird, even when they are super adorable)  It becomes very hard to step back and be just a photographer.  Which is a good thing and a bad thing. Really what it is the hardest to do is put the baby down.  😉  Way back when we did their maternity session I introduced you to two of our best friends.  My husband has known John since they were in 5th grade (I think?) and Rachel shortly there after.  Best man at our wedding, they have become some of our best couple friends over the years.  So yes, it was extra hard to put sweet, gorgeous, perfect Veronica down and take photos.  But I did.

I wanted to step outside my comfort zone this time and get more off-the-beanbag shots.  More interaction.  It’s a direction I have been wanting to move with my newborn sessions anyways.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love my (huge) beanbag and the blankets and the hats.  But I love families.  I love snuggling, soothing, kissing, just BEING.  Some people might refer to it as lifestyle.  I might refer to it as that too if I have to choose a word.  So that is what I did with this session.  I don’t think John and Rachel realized just how much they’d be in the pictures but that’s what friends are for, right? To experiment on!

Thankfully their bedroom was absolutely perfect.  White duvet, white pillows, a beautiful simple blue wall and a huge window looking out on the water behind me.  I could have shot in there all day long.  In fact, I tried.  But we didn’t want to take too long of a risk with a white blanket if you get my drift.  😉  We did do some more traditional beanbag shots, but these are by far my favorites.

Sometimes, simple is best.  Baby, family, bed, window.  All you really need.

So as I said in my previous post, I don’t normally do birthday sessions or cake smashes.  It’s not really my thing.  I don’t have studio space so there is nowhere to set it up.  But cake smashes have become all the rage so when a lovely past client came back asking if we could do one in the park I certainly could not say no.  🙂   So here we were at miss A.’s newborn session one year ago…

And here she is nowadays:

We had a great time setting up in the park for the shoot.  Mom had done SO much work ahead of time.  She made, by herself, not only a gorgeous giant cupcake cake but one that was vegan due to A.’s milk allergy.  Absolutely amazing!  She had also put together tissue paper pompoms and gotten balloons as well as stuff for a tea party with her other daughter.  So we had a tea party in the park followed by a cake smash.  A. was a little timid when it came to the smashing but she did love the taste of the frosting.  🙂

There are so many things I could say about this session.  I could talk about how it’s awesome to be given as a gift to someone like I was here.  I could talk about how incredibly handsome and perfect baby A. is.  I could talk about how he was, even at 17 days, an amazingly perfect sleeper (seriously!) and did not wake one time until I was ready to walk out the door.  I could talk about how much I loved having a chunky adorable baby for the second time in a row.  So many things.  Instead I will talk about love and how much a baby can be welcomed into a family.  With big sister, S having just turned 6, baby A comes at the perfect time to join their family.  Dad told me “he is such a blessing to us.”  And he really, really is.  They are all so in love with him – you can just feel it when you watch them, especially big sister.  I don’t think she stopped smiling the entire time she was around him. Congratulations, G. family.  He is absolutely perfect!

On Tuesday of this week I got to go meet the gorgeous B. for her newborn session.  At 9lbs 5oz she was far bigger than the recent newborns I have had and I loved every second of it!!  There is something so precious about chubby sweet smelling newborn.  Just perfection.  She was a great sleeper and even when she was awake, she just loved to stare at mom and dad and have her head and arms rubbed. 🙂  So, so cute!!  It was finally warm enough to go outside for a bit at the very end of the session – something I hope to do more often with newborns in the coming months!  Congrats J and J, she is adorable and I loved meeting you guys!
