Photography in the time of Quarantine

A crazy worldwide pandemic that has basically stopped the world in its tracks.  Everyone staying home and staying safe to help contain the spread of anything further than it has already gone.  One thing that can’t stop, though?  Babies being born and children growing up.  But what CAN’T and ISN’T happening right now for the foreseeable future are the photography sessions capturing those moments.  In this series of posts I am going to share with you some tips and tricks to help you photograph your own babies during this time.  This post talks a bit about how to photograph your own baby’s milestones – that first 12 months of their lives!  Check out the Fresh 48 Session and Newborn Session posts as well!

Photography in the time of Quarantine

Yup.  Although nothing similar to that story, that title sure feels like where we are right now. In a series of posts here on the blog, I am going to share with you some tips and tricks to help you photograph your own babies during this time.  This post talks a bit about how to Photograph your own newborn sessions!  You can see the posts on Fresh 48 Hospital sessions HERE and the post on Baby’s First Year Milestone Sessions HERE

Please realize as with learning anything else, your photos will not look like mine in the end.  I have been doing this for 13 years and have different equipment, knowledge, editing programs, etc.  HOWEVER, no one is able to get professional photos done at this point so ANY are better than none!!  I talk in my class that I teach how important it is to not miss the moments no matter your skill or knowledge level.  And these moments?  They’re definitely big ones.

Newborn Session

Oh newborns.  The sweet tiny babies that we have brought home from the hospital.  They change so very much in those first few weeks and I don’t want you to miss a thing about them while we are all stuck at home.  You’ll find if you read my Fresh 48 post that a lot of this is similar.  The newborn session is a bit more involved but some of the basic tenets are the same.

You guys heard of that book – Love in the Time of Cholera?

Yup.  Although nothing similar to that story, that title sure feels like where we are right now. In this series of posts here on the blog I am going to share with you some tips and tricks to help you photograph your own babies during this time.  Today I am talking about how to Photograph your own Fresh 48 sessions – the newest of the new!  For my post on Newborn Sessions click HERE and for my post on Baby’s First Year Milestone Sessions click HERE

How to photograph your Fresh 48 Session
the very beginning

Fresh 48 Session

Fresh 48 Sessions are those sessions done right after having the baby in the hospital.  Named Fresh 48 because normally they occur in the first 48 hours after birth.  These days I know some hospitals are trying to release patients earlier than that to get them home BUT these are photos that shouldn’t be skipped if you can help it / feel up to it.  There are so many tiny details in those first few hours that will never ever be the same.  Don’t miss out on them!  Below are my suggestions for how to photograph your Fresh 48 session.

CHOOSING A LENS FOR YOUR CAMERA

An introduction to and overview of camera lenses
How to buy choose a camera lens Rhode Island Photographer

In a previous post, I wrote all about choosing a camera.  But when you get a camera body, you will also need a lens!  Have you ever stopped and looked at camera lenses?  You see all sorts of funky letters and numbers like Canon 85mm f/1.4.  Or Nikon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6G VR.  It’s all gobbledygook until you understand a few basic things on choosing a lens for your camera.  When it comes to choosing a lens to go with the body of the camera you bought (this only applies to DSLR and Mirrorless because remember that point and shoots have one fixed lens) there are many choices out there.  So.  Many.  So I am going to try and help break it down a bit.  There are more factors that go into purchasing one but I want to keep this on a pretty basic level!  You can always email me if you have more specific questions.  And as I said in my previous post, I am a professional photographer, I am not a professional camera retailer so I will make some errors somewhere along the way, I am sure!

CAMERA BUYING GUIDE

One question I get asked more often than anything is “What kind of camera should I get for my kids / spouse?”  So I thought I would put together a little something to help you in choosing a camera in your shopping.  While I am a professional photographer, I am not a professional camera retailer so I am sure there will be something I miss somewhere!  Forgive me 🙂

Now, please note.  Just as a gorgeous set of all-clad pans and shun knives will not make me Julia Child, the best camera equipment in the world will not make anyone a fantastic photographer.  Choosing a camera is just the start.  Whoever is getting the camera MUST MUST MUST learn to use it!! And I don’t mean just reading the manual.  But actually taking the time to learn what goes into photography.  At the end I will provide some resources for further learning!

Please note, Part Two of this article can be found here – Choosing a Lens
