1.  I rented two lenses this past weekend to try something new and I am in LOVE.  I got the 85mm and the 35 mm.  I used both in my last two sneak peeks.  GORGEOUS!!!  Now I have lens lust.  It is a bad bad thing.  Like anything else you get addicted to, you need more and more of it!

2.  The last few sessions I had available are booking up!  I still have a few spots in November.  Don’t wait.  🙂

3.  I have new holiday card templates.  Just like lenses, it is a sick sick addiction.  Fortunately buying templates is quite less expensive than buying lenses!  If you had a session with me this year and want to use some of your photos in a holiday card, let me know and I can design one for you!  You don’t have to have had a session just now to do it.

4.  In family news, Layne is now on the move.   Watch out world!  She can’t crawl but has mastered scooting along on her bottom with one leg in front and one leg behind.  She’s getting quite fast!  She is also walking clear across the room if you hold her hands.  The girl is SO not going to crawl.  Fortunately at 22 lbs she also isn’t quite ready to stand on her own just yet.  That’s a lot of weight for those little cankles.  😉

Layne2web

5.  I have another couple shoot coming up in the middle of November and I can’t WAIT.  I am already super excited about it – they never had engagement photos done so they want to do anniversary shots.  We’re doing it in the Narragansett area and in the evening.  I have an idea that I want to try based on another photographer’s work.  SO can’t wait!!

6.  Speaking of shoots, I am getting to shoot on a dairy farm this Friday!!  I think.  Unless they change their mind and want it at their house.  Seriously, how much FUN with that be?  She talked about baby cows 🙂  Stay tuned!

7.  I am very excited to announce that I will be introducing you all to some of my closest photography friends right here on the blog.  There are going to be interviews, photos, lots and lots of stuff to look at.  All coming over the next few weeks and months.

8.  I am getting ready for my first of two weekends in Philadelphia!  I can’t wait to get back and see some old friends and old clients.  And meet some new ones, too!!!  This coming weekend is two sessions with brand new clients, and in two weeks I’ll be back again for five (!!) sessions with old clients.  And in two weeks I get two nights in a hotel all to myself.  Any mom knows that this is pretty much equivalent to heaven on earth.  Now if only I hadn’t scheduled shoots for 8:30 in the morning I could have added sleeping in to the list.  Ah well.

9.  I have developed (another) small addiction – this time to newborn hats.  If you haven’t discovered Etsy yet, you must.  I now, having finally integrated hats and other hand knit things into my newborn sessions, spend way too much time poring over the site looks for new goodies.  You can find just about anything on there you want that is handmade.  Such a great resource!!  And in today’s economy it also kinda feels good to give money to a person and not a big company.

10.  And last I leave you with one more shot from my mini this past weekend.  I just love the moment here – we have all gotten these kisses from our kids.  Full on running to you kisses.  Now a little secret – she had actually put a candy in her mouth as a joke.  But his reaction and the resulting shot – priceless 😉

Dear Nolan,

Four years ago today (and about six hours ago exactly as I am typing this) you came into the world and made us a family.  You wanted to be born on the most appropriate of days, Labor Day, and you took your time arriving putting mommy through 27 hours in the hospital.  Thankfully when it was time to actually come out, you came quickly and with a small head.  We were in love at first sight with you.  Our first child.  Our baby.  A perfect mix of both of us.

We knew our lives would never be the same, that they would be changed forever, but we had no idea how much they would change.  You have been a wonder, a marvel, a delight to us and have made our lives, brighter, funnier, happier and fuller for the past four years.

Over the years, daddy may have trained you to be a Red Sox fan, but I won the ultimate battle and turned you into a Steelers fan…

We have taken you to baseball games, the beach, the orchard, so so many places to share with you…

We have watched you grow into a wonderful, adorable boy.  You have weathered three moves, two cities, numerous haircuts, a few trips to the emergency room and so many more things.  We’ve seen more than our share of tears, tantrums and the like but have had many hundreds times over more of laughs, tickles, giggles, hiccups and playing. We’ve taken you to several different states, on an airplane, in a car and even on a train.  We have learned to live with an egg allergy and numerous trips back to find “teddy” wherever we left him because you couldn’t sleep without him.  We have read books until they fell apart and sung songs so often we know them by heart.  Although you are four years old now and although all traces of baby are gone now, you’ll always be our sweet, sweet baby boy. And now that you are a big brother we get to watch you with Layne which is a whole new world of wonderful.  Thank you for making our lives richer, better, happier, more complete and more perfect.  Thank you for helping us remember to not take life so seriously, that it’s okay to dance around and sing at the top of our lungs or stay in our pajamas and watch cartoons.  Thank you for being you.  We love you very, VERY much.

1.  A little peek at what I got to do Sunday evening.  In a VINEYARD no less!!  Some fun editing, too.
Maternity_0091fun

2.  Speaking of, I still have a few spots left in my maternity and newborn promo!!!  Let me know if you or someone you know would like to book; it’s over in 7 short days.

3.  Layne has her first official cold right now.  This is slowing things down drastically at the moment for me editing-wise.  Seven and a half months and her first fever.  Poor thing.  Her brother got it and gave it to her.  Looks like she is going to run like her mommy – goes up fast and very hot. 🙁  And Matt is sniffling while I try desperately to fight it off!!

4.  My holiday mini sessions are all set and ready to roll out.  Yay!!  I just have to figure out where on earth I am going to hold them!  Anyone have a gorgeous house and lands they’d like to donate for a day?? 😉

5.  Another shot from my first-ever engagement.  Sigh.  I just love this session and keep coming back to it to edit more.  And more.Engagement

6.  I have decided I realllly like evening light.  My engagement session was evening light.  My maternity Sunday was evening light.  And my maternity this Thursday (at the beach, no less!!) is scheduled for evening light.  It just has a look.  A glow.  A special intimacy almost.  Now if only babies liked evenings as much as I do life would be SO much easier.

7.  Who else is with me and cannot WAIT for the season premiere of “Glee????”  I know there must be some other dorks fans out there really looking forward to this.  If you have had a session with me (a kids session) you have likely heard me sing.  I used to sing a lot.  In school.  In church.  Everywhere.  So this show holds a very special place in my heart.  Not only that but it’s really freaking funny.

8.  I can talk about two things now that I have been waiting to talk about — I have two ads coming out in the next month or two.  One will be on the my02818.com website which is targeted towards the good citizens of East Greenwich, RI and one is in The Baby Guide which is a huge publication that goes out all over New England.  Matt and I went back and forth over the ads, since I had never had to put money into advertising in Philly.  He was for it, and I was against it.  But we both realized that ads were the way to go.  So now with the hard (and I do mean hard) design work behind me, I am just waiting for them to appear!  The web ad is scheduled to start on Sept 01 and the Baby Guide ad, well, whenever it comes out in print.  I’m having an ad in print!  Can’t wait to see both of them.  And yes, I am definitely taking a picture of the print ad for my files.  And probably keeping a copy.  Or ten.  And possibly sending them to family.  And friends. 😉

9.  Nolan’s birthday is rapidly approaching.  Four years.  My baby will be four. years. old. in about 15 days.  That is CRAZY.  His birthday party theme is Disney’s Cars.  At first it was Roary (on PBS), then Cars, then Mickey, then Dora, then ???.  I really wanted a cool race car party so I waited a day until he forgot and then asked him if he wanted a “Lightning McQueeeeeen (how he says it)” party and he said yes.  SCORE.  I get the party I wanted.  I mean that he wanted.  I am so excited too because, for the first time, he will be getting a REAL birthday cake.  I don’t mention it on here much at all, but Nolan is allergic to eggs.  Eggs in any shape, any form.  Seriously, emergency room, epi-pen allergic to them.  (Though we are hoping he will have grown out of it at his next testing)  So restaurants, baked goods, birthday parties, etc are not a commonplace occurrence in our lives.  But we found A and J Bakery here in Rhode Island that specializes in nut-free and egg-free foods.  Finally, my son will have a real honest-to-God birthday cake.  Just like all of the other kids.  And that makes me a little teary.  If you have a child with any kind of allergy, anything that makes them different, you can understand just HOW amazing and special it is when they get to do something that makes them “like all the other kids.”

10.  Have I mentioned yet that I am going to the Outer Banks in a few short weeks????  I am SO excited!!  I am going with about 12-15 other professional photographers from around the country and we are staying for three days just hanging out, sharing ideas and spending a relaxing long weekend on the ocean.  So any no-hurricane thoughts for mid September in NC would be greatly appreciated.

1.  I am working on totally revamping my pricing.  It feels so GOOD!!  Me, the person not crazy about change is L.O.V.I.N.G. it!!  And I am pretty sure you all are going to love it too.  Hope to have everything up by mid-week this week.  Might be next week though depending on how much the kiddos let me do.

2.  I have a really cool product in the works that I have not seen anyone else ANYWHERE make for their clients.  I designed it from scratch and am sending it off to the lab for printing as we speak.  Here’s hoping it works.  If so, I’ll be sure to share a sneak peek.  It ties in with the new pricing setup…  And if it doesn’t work, eh, nothing lost, right?

3.  A little known fact – did you know that holiday photos are best done between October and mid-November?  Yup.  It’s true. In fact my cutoff for holiday photos is the weekend after Thanksgiving. This gives me time to edit, get the orders in and everything delivered in time for various holidays.  So if you want photos for holiday gifts, don’t wait to do your sessions.  I plan to do two days of Holiday Minis and will have information about that up within the next week or two.  There may also just be a special or two for people to take advantage of.  😉

And Philadelphia peeps, I am also planning a weekend back in the area for holiday photos in late October / early November!!  Keep an eye out for announcements and emails.

4.  Nolan is turning 4 (!!!) one month from tomorrow.  I cannot believe it’s already been four years.   I have yet to put together invitations for his party (planning is not my thing) and wanted some pictures for it if possible.  He volunteered to go on a photo shoot with me on Sunday when we got home from brunch with friends.  Turns out his new school is basically right next to the Bay in Cranston and when I saw the water, the boats and the reeds I knew I wanted to do photos there.  He took the initiative though, asking if we could go.  Mostly he was his crazy silly almost-four-year-old self but I did get some decent ones.  Here are my favorites:

5.  I have been a Twittering FOOL recently. I have found a new love… If you’re on there I’d love to see you!  It is fantastic for networking and meeting new people.  LOVE it!

6.  Found (through Twitter, seriously people there are a BUNCH of great resources there) a fantastic blog – Savor The Thyme (savorthethyme.blogspot.c0m).  Jennifer highlights a bunch of healthy recipes (Shrimp with Watermelon and Pineapple Salsa, anyone?) and even has started sharing “vlogs” (video blog posts) with helpful things like how to pit an avocado (without taking your hand off).  I love having some healthy recipes to look at and enjoy reading her writing.  You should check her out!

7. We are planning a family trip to Austin, TX in October and I cannot WAIT!!  One of my all-time favorite photographers (and friend) lives there and we are going to get to hang out with her.  That and I’m excited for a first family trip as well and have heard wonderful things about Austin.  If you’ve been there I’d love any and all tips for what to see and do.

8.  Next month marks two years I have been in business.  I have a few fantastic goody giveaways planned to celebrate.  I love goodies!!!

9.  There is still time for you to vote for me in the My FOX Philly’s HOT List for Best Portrait Photographer.  You are allowed one vote per email address and the contest ends September 11.  You can vote HERE.  Just make sure to confirm your free account – that’s the only way your vote counts!

10.  You will all be happy to know that my 50mm lens came back from the repair shop in better than new condition!!  Big props to the guys at Midstate Camera Repair for such a quick and fantastic job!

That’s it for this week.  Stay tuned because I have a promotion to announce, holiday sessions to debut and a few other things 🙂

I do this on my personal blog a lot (okay, well…did…sorry, mom!!) so I thought I would carry it over to here.  Maybe let you get to know me a little bit better 🙂  What is it, you ask?  Basically, it’s a collection of ten things that I’ll post about.  It can be pictures, it can be stories, it can be tips, a whole mishmash of things!

1.  I’ll start off the first one with a general HELLO RHODE ISLAND!!!  We love love love it here so far.   We are right in the Edgewood section of Cranston and adore our neighborhood and area.  Within the first week we met a whole bunch of neighbors on the circle, received a loaf of banana bread, got our neighborhood map with everyone’s names and had already been informed of the yearly Halloween parade for the kids to participate in.  This is a WORLD of difference from what we were used to.  Not to mention that we not only have a driveway but we also have grass!  To most people that is a given.  But after four years of Center City Philadelphia where we had to find street parking for two cars and our “yard” consisted of cement and cinderblock this is just about heaven. 🙂

2.  I am on the preschool hunt for Nolan.  We visited one center already and are open to more suggestions, preferably in the Cranston area.  RI is small but I don’t want to truck all over town since he’s only probably going to be doing half days.  Ideas, any RI readers?

3.  I dare you not to smile! (Fine, I’m biased because she’s my kid.  But seriously, can you see this and NOT smile?)
Layne 6 months 3

4.  I’ll be participating in the Whole Foods Waterman store’s Block Party this Sunday, July 19th from 12-3.  Come out and visit me!!  This is the first time I’m doing anything like this so I’d sure love people to talk to 🙂   And if you’re a reader I don’t yet know, stop by and introduce yourself!

5.  I am so excited – there is a product out called a lay-flat album that I cannot WAIT to show to you guys!  They are just gorgeous and I am so excited to add them to my offerings.  Once I can have a free hour to design and order one I’ll take some pictures and show you.

6.  Tip of the week (day? hour?) Do you know that the best way to display pictures on your wall is to go BIG?  While most people think an 8×10 is a big photo, try hanging an 8×10 on an empty wall, then step back and see how teeny it ends up looking.  If you’re going to stick with 8x10s because you fear any bigger is too big (promise, you it’s really really not!!) then do a grouping of them together.  Put together four or six or even ten of them!  For wall displays, I recommend 11×14 as the smallest possible size.  I am designing two wall galleries right now to go above our couch and fireplace.  I can’t wait to see it all put together.  I am going BIG – 11×14, 16×20, 20×20 and bigger!  That’s really the only way to do it if you’re going to do it at all.  Some wall display ideas that I share with clients can be seen HERE.

7.  I have some very cool projects in the works that I can’t talk about yet because they’re not finalized but I am super excited!!  Fun and new / different things for me to do.  I can’t wait!!!!

8.  Is anyone else excited about Half-Blood Prince???  WE ARE!!  I already have a date night scheduled with the hubby for next Tuesday night while the kids are at the beach with my inlaws.  We’re making a nice dinner and then heading out to see it.  Here’s hoping there aren’t a ton of people there on a weeknight.  RI’ers (and MA’ers), any suggestions on theaters to go to / avoid?

9.  Did I mention the beach??  That’s right!  Vacation for me starts this Saturday as we head to Naragansett Bonnet Shores for the week.  Although it’s not really vacation because I’ll be coming back on Sunday to do the Block Party and then again on Tuesday for a meeting.  Still.  Beach time!!

10.  I am starting to work on my Holiday 2009 offerings.  Yes.  Already.  In fact, if you are thinking about booking a holiday session, do it NOW.  Seriously.  Don’t book the actual pictures for now, book your October and November sessions now.  Holiday time tends to get crazy and I have a cut off of usually right around December 1 for sessions.  So if you are thinking about photos, contact me, don’t wait!!

That’s it for today 🙂
