Things I am Liking 3.07.09

Who doesn’t like to shop?

Mini Social

I discovered The Mini Social a few months ago. You sign up for a membership and get emails about secret sales on some really cute designer kids clothes! The prices are great and the designers are ones you’ll find in local boutiques. I love it because the clothes are always unique and the sales make them affordable.  Plus, your child won’t look like everyone else’s!  🙂

Things I am liking 3.5.09

I’ve decided to start a once-every-few-days posting of things I am liking. You will see this range from books I’m reading (eg today’s post), to websites I’ve found to products I’ve tried (or want to try!!). Some might be photography related, some mom related and some, well, possibly unrelated to anything 🙂 So check back to see what I’m blogging about next!

Earthquakes

If you are a mother, go and get this book. GET. IT.

I am an avid reader so it’s appropriate I kick this off with a book. I tend to devour books and have for as long as I can remember. When I go to the library I come home with 7-10 books, not just one or two. I have read fiction, non-fiction, well-written crime, sleazy romance, you name it and I’ve probably read that kind of book. Very rarely a book really gets to me on a deeper level than just entertainment. Some, like The Kite Runner break my heart and open my eyes to what is going on in other parts of the world. Others, like Anne of Green Gables sweep me up in romance. Some make me laugh and some make me cry. I just finished reading a book that made me do all of the above. Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner has to be the BEST, most TRUE book about being a new mother that I have ever read. Never have I related to a book as much as I did this one. I highly recommend this to any mother, especially a new one. I guarantee that there will be at least one thought, sentence or scene that you have experienced. If you’re like me, it will be about 50 of them. Jennifer Weiner (A Moment of Jen, her blog, is a great read as well) nailed motherhood and all of its emotional roller coaster ups and downs perfectly. And, as a bonus, if you’re here in Philadelphia you can relate to it even better because it takes place here in the city. At the same time, even if you’re not from anywhere in the US, you’ll still be able to relate. So my first recommendation. Go get this book. Then give the baby to dad, get a nice glass of wine (or hot chocolate as I like) and curl up and dive into the lives of Lia, Ayinde, Becky and Kelly. And find yourself in all of them.

The kids

I start back to sessions this week with some head shots and then a newborn on the 21st and I cannot WAIT.  I didn’t think I would miss photographing little ones and the editing and the emails as much as I have.  In the meantime, more pictures I am taking at home of the kids.

Since I never put Nolan on here anymore, here is the big boy.  This was taken when he was pretty bored and tired of being cooped up inside the house so forgive the serious expression.  I still think he’s a handsome thing but I’m pretty biased 😉

And Layne, who has started smiling 🙂

Layne’s Newborn Session

I have heard that it’s impossible to get good pictures of your own kid when you’re a photographer. I know this to be true for Nolan – which is why there are never photos of him on here. 🙂 But I was hoping since Layne is so new that I could work my newborn photography magic on her. And I did! I needed just 20 minutes to capture these quick shots. There is obviously something really special about newborn sessions and they are definitely my favorite, but when it’s YOUR newborn I discovered it’s even cooler 🙂

Introducing Layne Elizabeth

Well after much waiting and anticipation, we have a beautiful little baby GIRL!! Layne Elizabeth was born Monday morning, December 29, 2008 at 5:45. She weighed 6 lbs 9.5 oz and was 18.25 inches long – our little peanut – and is the spitting image of Nolan when he was born. I had a very quick labor and while it was extremely painful until I got the epidural, I was fortunate in that it was very easy. We are home now and adjusting to everything. We are both doing well, just a bit tired.

All of the photos except the last were taken by one of the other residents who used to do photography. I will treasure these forever…

I will definitely be doing our own little photo shoots so stay tuned!! 🙂
