One of the things I love the most about my job is the longevity of client relationships.  I have said it before, but I am so lucky.  It is a privilege to do family photography.  Even more so, to be asked back again and again by families over the years.  And I treasure the chance to do their family photos as they grow and change.  The W family is no different. Having worked with them since their oldest was an adorable little six month old, this was a continuation of our sessions together.  I have seen them add one sibling, and then another.  To grow individually and as a family.  And I have been so lucky that they choose me to document it all.

This session we met up in a local field and traipsed all over the place to find gorgeous locations for their images.   We got such an incredible variety of images.  From rich sun drenched photos, to the amazing foliage, to gorgeous and simple backlighting.  Also, moms’s outfit choices?  Perfection!!  I loved the mix of the mustard and olive with the blues of the denim.  Coupled with their adorableness, the color palette worked absolutely perfectly with the gorgeous fall setting around us.  We had so much fun walking, and chatting, and playing games.  And the kids were such a delight – being familiar with me is a definite aid!

Family photography doesn’t have to be stiff and serious.  We have so much fun during my sessions and I always come home with a full heart (and often a sore back!).

CAMERA BUYING GUIDE

One question I get asked more often than anything is “What kind of camera should I get for my kids / spouse?”  So I thought I would put together a little something to help you in choosing a camera in your shopping.  While I am a professional photographer, I am not a professional camera retailer so I am sure there will be something I miss somewhere!  Forgive me 🙂

Now, please note.  Just as a gorgeous set of all-clad pans and shun knives will not make me Julia Child, the best camera equipment in the world will not make anyone a fantastic photographer.  Choosing a camera is just the start.  Whoever is getting the camera MUST MUST MUST learn to use it!! And I don’t mean just reading the manual.  But actually taking the time to learn what goes into photography.  At the end I will provide some resources for further learning!

Please note, Part Two of this article can be found here – Choosing a Lens

What to Wear – Shoes

Shoes.

Something so small and seemingly simple has the power to make or break a family photo. So let’s spend some time talking about them.

Let me begin by saying, it will not be the end of the world if your child or spouse will not wear what you want them to wear. It really, really won’t. So take everything I say with a grain of salt. BUT the shoes in your photos can absolutely change the feel of the images.

No photographer sets out to take photos of your feet. Unless you’re doing a beach session and you want sandy toes, it’s just not going to happen. But in a traditional mix of images, at least in my sessions, about 1/3-1/2 of the images will include feet in them! Shoes should not be the first thing that people see when they look at your photos. And your look that you will spend so much time putting together? It goes from head to toe!

Newport Family Session

Newport. Oh you, beautiful, beautiful town.  The most famous aspect of it, if you’re not familiar with it, are the Newport mansions.  Driving down Bellevue Avenue looking at the houses and then taking Ocean Drive out around the water is truly one of the most breathtaking, awe-inspiring things you can do.  Stunningly beautiful.  That whole area of Rhode Island, in fact, is beautiful.  So when my client contacted me and asked about doing a family session where they had their wedding photos done on the grounds of one of the Newport mansions, I was not going to say no.  And I am so so glad I didn’t!!!!  Heather had been following my work for a while and had recently moved to Rhode Island which made having a family session much easier to coordinate.  Over Columbus Day weekend I headed down to Newport and we met up to do some photos on the grounds of The Waves where she and her husband had done their wedding photos 16 years prior.  The owner of the property is an old family friend of Heather’s husband, who was so very, VERY gracious enough to let us use the property for photos once again and I cannot thank her enough.  Heather and her family were AWESOME.  Her kids are the same ages as mine almost, a 9 year old boy and a 7 year old girl.  And just as outgoing and social as mine too, which was SO. Much. Fun.  We discussed many important things like flag football, their dad’s hockey scars, their mom’s singing voice, and how much fun photo bombing can be when done at the right times 😉  As during any family session we did a bunch of different photos and one thing I loved is that mom brought along a nosegay made of yellow roses, like the one she carried the day of her wedding – I love the fact that we could incorporate that into the session with her daughter.  Here are a few favorites from our session together – enjoy!

My second family photography session during my day of Urban Mini Shoots in downtown Providence  is a family I’ve worked with a few times now.  The first time was during mom’s maternity session with the younger sister, and then again at her newborn session and then last year for some family photography for holiday photos.  I love when clients return over time and use me for their family photography  sessions- it is such an honor to get to photograph them at different points and watch their families grow!!!  This year  our sessions was wonderful – we walked around a bit down by the Providence River and spent some time over at the railing with the city in the background.  And again, I used the bridges.  What can I say?  I love bridges.  I also have a family shot from this session that I LOVE but that will have to wait until after the holidays to share as I don’t have permission from mom yet 😉  S. & A. were delights to photograph and I fell in love with S’s wrinkly nose smile!!  And big sister, well she is just growing and growing – such a beauty with those blue eyes <3  Even mom and dad got in on some solo shot action – yes, again I made them kiss.  I love love LOVE the shot of them in black and white with the tall buildings behind them!!  Side note – if you come to do family photography with me, be prepared to kiss everyone.  I love kisses!!  Here are a few sneak peeks from our session together – enjoy!
