Sunset Maternity Session | Narragansett Maternity Photography

There is something about the end of summer in Rhode Island.  I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful all year round, but the end of summer is special.  Golden sunsets, the hint of breezes, beautiful skies and warm(ish) water.  To get to photograph a maternity session in this time period makes it even more fun.  And to photograph a couple as sweet and loving and amazing as this one, well that pretty much made it perfect.

Beach maternity sessions are one of my most requested sessions.  Whether it’s clients on babymoons to Newport or people living in the area, everyone in the ocean state wants photos with…well…the ocean. 🙂  These two were no exception.  Mom had grown up in Rhode Island and the couple had moved back to the area recently from NYC, expecting their first baby girl.  C&P wanted images in one of their favorite places in the world – by the water.  We spent an hour or so together going up and down the shoreline for some very different looks as as the sun set, and then mom got right into the water – check out the laughing photos as small waves hit her!

It was such a wonderful evening getting to know and photograph them.  It made going back a few weeks later to photograph their precious newborn baby girl even better.  By booking a newborn session and adding on the maternity everything got that much easier and more relaxed.

It’s been a hot minute, so to pick up my backlog in blogging, let’s begin with the newborn session from the last post’s gooooorgeous maternity session.  This beautiful baby girl was so very ready for her closeup at just over two weeks old – and so were mom and dad.  They chose my classic newborn session so their session was much more posed in nature, but we still were able to get a wonderful variety of images.  Especially with the weather being gorgeous outside, we could even add in images outside under the trees in their front yard.  It’s one of my favorite bonuses when the weather is nice during newborn sessions – there is something fun and unexpected about taking everyone outside!  I will happily do images in yards, on benches, under trees, etc.  As long as there is pretty open shade I am good to go.

These two continued the fun and love and adoration for each other from their maternity session straight into their newborn.  They loved that little girl and each other so so very much.  You know when you can just tell how happy people are – when they radiate it?  That is what they did.  Whether I asked them to look at me (more common in the classic session) or give a kiss to someone, they were right there doing it eagerly.  I always joke it’s never hard to get new parents to give babies kisses and hugs and they were no exception.   🙂

I also want to take just a second to chat about their outfits – mom was absolutely stunning in a traditional cream colored tunic that allowed baby girl to shine.  And dad was perfect in a linen shirt.  Both outfits were great and definitely fell under the “what to wear for your newborn session” prompts.  Flattering, beautiful colors, and a cohesive look that let baby girl be the star of the show and didn’t distract.

Rhode Island Family Photographer – Fall Family Field Fun

No matter what other weather we have here in New England, fall makes up for it every year.  There is absolutely nothing like being a Rhode Island family photographer in the fall – the golden sun, the leaves, the weather.  It is the perfect setting for photos.  As a result, when you have a family photography session that falls on one of those perfect days, some magic happens.  There simply isn’t another explanation.  It’s just…magical.

Meeting up with the B family was one of those such days.  Where everything just worked perfectly.  We walked until we found the field I wanted.  After that it was time to let that magic happen.  I strongly believe it setting things up and then letting the action happen naturally.  I might give some prompts or ideas, but it’s never strongly posed, as you will see. Letting families be natural and have fun makes for such beautiful images.  They laughed, and did ring around the rosie, and ran through trails and just stopped everything for a small bit of time to be a family and to love on one another.  The best.

If you are interested in pre-planning your fall photos (always a good idea because it gets busy!) A few of my favorite places in the fall for photos in and around Rhode Island:
Cumberland Monastery
Lincoln Woods
Joe’s Rock
Colt State Park
Goddard State Park
Blue Hills Reservation
Borderland Park (**please note at time of publishing there is a parking fee as well as a photography permit and fee required for sessions)

What to Wear – Shoes

Shoes.

Something so small and seemingly simple has the power to make or break a family photo. So let’s spend some time talking about them.

Let me begin by saying, it will not be the end of the world if your child or spouse will not wear what you want them to wear. It really, really won’t. So take everything I say with a grain of salt. BUT the shoes in your photos can absolutely change the feel of the images.

No photographer sets out to take photos of your feet. Unless you’re doing a beach session and you want sandy toes, it’s just not going to happen. But in a traditional mix of images, at least in my sessions, about 1/3-1/2 of the images will include feet in them! Shoes should not be the first thing that people see when they look at your photos. And your look that you will spend so much time putting together? It goes from head to toe!

What to Wear – Family Outfits Coordination | RI Family Photography

You’ve booked your photography session – fantastic!! Now comes the hardest part other than deciding what to order after you’ve seen your beautiful images. What on earth are you and everyone else going to wear for your family outfits???

**Note for maternity sessions head to my two maternity what to wear posts:
General Maternity Tips
Summer Maternity Session Tips

My Amy Ro Photography clients have the option of using a wonderful styling site that I provide to them, but in case you don’t, here are a few general useful tips.

My starting point when choosing outfits is to choose who in the family is the hardest on themselves in images. Who is the pickiest? I will say that 90% of the time, from what I have seen in both my family and newborn photography sessions, that is mom. As moms we pick and pull apart the teeniest things about ourselves. We just do. So therefore, if you are mom reading this, I want you to pick the outfit you feel the MOST beautiful in before picking a single other thing.

Once you have selected who is the pickiest, think carefully about where you are going to be doing the photos. Outfits at a beach should have a very different feel and look to them than ones done in a city or in a studio setting. Decide whether you want to be more neutral in your tones or more colorful. Normally you can look at the decor in your home to give you an idea of what you’re more drawn to.

If you choose neutrals, great! Neutrals are easy to combine. Creams and ANYTHING pretty much work well together. And it’s easy to add a pop of color somewhere as well. Moreover, it will match no matter what setting you’re in. Unless that’s Antarctica. That won’t go. 😉

Amy Ro Photography family outfits ideas for photography sessions in Rhode Island and Massachusetts

We all tend to know what colors we look good in. (And what we don’t look good in.) But when it comes to picking schemes for the everyone it can be…overwhelming. In general you want colors of the family outfits to blend / to match / to coordinate. This does NOT mean all show up in white shirts and khakis (please pretty please don’t!!) A good super simple place to start is a color wheel, like below. Opposite colors are complimentary. Colors right next to each other are analogous. And within one “wedge” are variations of the same color

So once you have an idea of what color you’d like to do for your family outfits, you can use that color wheel to help pick other colors! And when in doubt, head right over to Pinterest. There are a millllllion color grouping suggestions on there. I saw several just doing a quick look for “what to wear family photography sessions.”

Once you have decided on your color palette, make sure all of the outfits go together in terms of dressiness or casualness . Don’t have someone in a suit coat and slacks and someone else in denim shorts and a tee shirt. You want the family outfits to have the same general feel for everyone in the photos. Overall you want to make a cohesive family group.

Going back to what I said earlier, once this is allll decided, go back to that original picky person we talked about. Pick an outfit for that person and everything else will fall into place. If the main person is wearing a print you can pull coordinating colors from that print for other members of the family. If the main person is wearing solid colors you can echo that color in accessories (bowties, hats, scarves, necklaces, shoes!) for others or choose a print that has those colors.

I promise, the outfits can be overwhelming at first but if you follow these tips, it will get much less so. And when all is said and done, run it by me, or by your photographer! I LOVE to be involved in the clothing selection. Choosing the right clothes can take your images from nice to gorgeous, and take you from happy to thrilled.

And isn’t that the ultimate goal?
