Itsy Bitsy Spider | Rhode Island Photography

Something a little different today.  We have a spider living basically right outside of our front door.  It has spun it’s scary beautiful web between the end of our mailbox and our brick.  It’s a popular spot – we had one there last year as well.  I have been looking at it for a few days now and rather than kill it like I really REALLY want to do (I am not a spider fan in the slightest), I decided to attempt to conquer my fears and get some cool photos of it instead.  I have this macro lens that I use for my newborns, so why not on something different?  I had used it to capture a baby bee a few days prior and got a really nice shot…so I set off to get the spider.  This involved me getting about six inches away from the spider.  Looking back, I must have been really focused on “getting the shot.”  Because I don’t know that I would get that close again.  And thank goodness the thing didn’t move because you would have heard me shriek wherever you are living.

Let me tell you, macro shots are a lot more difficult than I thought they would be.  (I am going to drift into photographer speak here for a minute so bear with me)  The depth of field is just SO so shallow shooting that close that to get the entire spider in focus I found was almost impossible.  Especially when the wind would blow the web.  Even the slightest little breeze would throw everything off.  I finally ended up shooting at f/16 for the last shot and even then I still didn’t get the entire thing perfectly focused.  Ah well.   I am still pretty pleased.  And I could have gotten closer and gotten even more detail but yeahhhhh.  Wasn’t happening.  So enjoy something different for a minute…starting with the baby bee to not freak people out right away.

I met up Saturday morning with one of my nursery contest runners up.  When I offered a special session for them, T. jumped right on it which I was really excited about because, personally, I adored her nursery.  And it didn’t disappoint in person.  So well put together, so cute and so perfect for little C.  Pink and green and owls everywhere you looked.  The theme just carried through beautifully into even the tiniest details.  And C. was perfectly adorable.  Mom had told me ahead of time that they were used to her “serious” look.  Let me tell you, I got a LOT of serious 🙂  But can you blame her?  This stranger coming into your room and yard with a big old camera?  I’d be pretty darned suspicious as well!!  We started in the yard and then spent some time in her beautiful nursery.  I had such a good time with her, even if she didn’t find me nearly as funny as I think I am 😉

1.  I have only a few dates left between now and September 1.  Really, September 18, so don’t wait to book!

2.  If you’ve been my client recently you might have noticed that my packaging is kind of “eh”.  That is because I have been winding my way through the remaining packaging that I had from my last order – well over a year ago.  Well some new packaging is on its way to me since I am now basically out.  The first thing in yesterday were my new stickers.  Yay!!  I love stickers.  (The tins are what my lab gives with them to organize them – SO cute!)

3.  Apparently Layne likes my stickers as well.  While I was wedged between the couch on my left and the rocking chair on my right I felt a little someone pushing to get through my legs and see what I had on the floor:

4.  We are thinking of a family vacation in January or February.  The first thought was a Disney cruise before I realized that I would be in a 240 sq foot room with both kids.  Constantly.  For four or five or six days.  I nixed that.  The next thought was perhaps a Disney World vacation package.  That looks like a good option for us though we aren’t sure of Disney with a two year old.  Any other ideas for where to vacation?  It will be us, a five year old and a two year old.  Probably 4-7 nights depending on where we end up going.  Of course if it is photographically beautiful that is an added bonus 😉

5.  One from Saturday morning’s beauty – more to come tomorrow.  Is she not one of the most beautiful little babies you have ever seen?  Those eyes and cheeks!

6.  My summer part-time nanny / babysitter starts next Monday and I cannot WAIT.  I will have three days per week where I am guaranteed someone else taking care of the kids and I can work.  I can meet clients, I can do sessions, I can do editing, I can go get a cup of coffee, I can actually run my business like it needs to be run!  Yippee!!!

7.  One from the maternity Saturday evening.  This was the first from my belly casting call sessions.  Loved her!  Is the color fabulous or what?

8.  I have a few cool macro shots that I will share with you later this week on here.  Yes, it IS a spider for those of you who saw the FB page but it was so neat.  And come on – I got six inches away from it!!  That alone should make you look (this from the girl who used to clamber up onto the couch and use the floor lamp to attempt to kill the spider that was probably 1/2 inch across….)

9.  Speaking of the FB page – I have shot UP UP UP in numbers!!  As of this moment writing (Monday night) I am at 966 people!!!!!  WOW.  I do not know where they came from or how they found me and I find it so hard to believe that they all like me enough to follow me but only 34 away from 1000.  One THOUSAND people?!?!?!!!  Like my friend Lyndsay said, “It’s like xx number of people standing in a room looking at your work.”  I can’t imagine 1000.  I dreamed of getting to 500.  Now to be so close is so exciting.  No, it doesn’t mean anything but it is really, really cool.  To me.  😉  And to Matt when I make him listen to me and gush about it.  I am trying to think of something fun to do when I hit 1000 but I have no idea what!  Any ideas for me?  Maybe a giveaway that people have to respond to on the page…..

10.  I am going to be a busy lady coming up here soon!  I have a session possibly Thursday, I leave Friday for Philadelphia, back Monday then possibly two newborn sessions next week along with a toddler sessions Tuesday afternoon.  Whew!  Then I take off for North Carolina on the 4th.  Going to be a busy, busy few weeks but I love it!!!  (I must admit though, three nights in a hotel by myself with no early morning sessions is reallllllly appealing to me right now.)

Hello and welcome to another week!  Hope you all had a fabulous weekend and Father’s Day.  We had a nice relaxed time.  Two sessions on Saturday that you will see on here this week and then nothing at all on Sunday.  Perfect.  Not sure what you guys do for Father’s Day but when it’s someone’s “day” here that person gets to sleep in.  (Unless it’s the kid’s “day” – they don’t get the concept of sleeping in though we really wish they would.)  So the kids and I were up bright and early Sunday morning.  Then the man of honor got up and we did nice simple presents and cards.  Some snapshots from the weekend and this morning.  The last few of Layne are not great quality because I took them with my 50m 14 which is dying 🙁  So sad.  It never was the same after I dropped it on the floor and got it repaired.

Sometimes the envelope is more important than the card.  Nolan wrote all of this himself except for the s in “this” and “because.”  He has no concept of spaces between words but we absolutely love it.  So this started the morning off:

Then it was opening presents with the kids – a picnic basket, new Red Sox hat, some dress shirts and pictures in frames for his new office

Then this morning just some fun with Layne.  How she can often be found – she loves mommy’s iPhone.  A lot.

She also discovered my lens cleaning pen in my bag.  Who knew it could be so entertaining?

I love this photo.  Not sure if it’s the cheeks, her chubby arms, the belly, just love it.

They love us from the moment we are born.  They are the ones who will hold our hands when we start walking, hold our bikes when we start riding and (usually) hold the keys to the car when we want to drive.  They can be wrapped around our little fingers (especially the girls).  They give magical healing kisses and big bear hugs.  Dads are wonderful, awesome, fun people.   And while they are usually the most difficult to convince to be in photos, a picture of a dad with his child can make me (and most people) melt.  Happy Father’s Day to all of the wonderful dads out there in my life and that I have photographed.
