  • Under : Recent Sessions

I saw a friend post hers today and realized I should really do the same!  Due to travel sessions and weddings, between now and September 1 my only remaining availability is:

July 10 and 11

July 17 and 18

July 31

August 28

Please note that as of August 1 I will no longer be accepting sessions on Sundays in order to have more time with my family.  I might open a few Sundays when we get into holiday season but that will be decided later.  I will be accepting a limited number of weekday sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  And because I’m a photographer so I should include some kind of photo – some newborn sweetness from earlier this week!

Sweet baby Q. | Rhode Island Newborn Photography

Monday of this week I got to go and photograph the adorable six day old Mr. Q.  When I got there, he was sleeping.  When I left he was almost sleeping.  He slept pretty much the entire time.  And when he did wake up to hang out with us for a bit, he was so relaxed and happy and calm it didn’t even bother me!  He was the perfect little subject – letting me move him, change hats, change blankets and never even making a peep.  He curled beautifully and was just such an easy, gorgeous little guy for me to photograph.  Loved him and loved this session!  (It didn’t hurt that his mom, K., and I got on like sisters pretty much from the get-go either.)  K. and M. it was great meeting you guys – enjoy him!!

Last year I ran a contest asking people to tell me WHY photography was important to them.  The winning response came from Elaina O and it was absolutely wonderful and sweet.  I won’t share what she wrote specifically because it was personal (as so many things are) but it expressed so clearly why photography was so, so important to them.  This past Saturday, six months later, we finally got together for her family session.  We met up at Borderland Park in Easton which is one of my favorite locations to shoot in.  Though J. (age 6) warmed up to me pretty quickly, P. (age 2) took a little bit longer but I got some adorable looks from both of them by the time we were done  :).  All it took was singing lots of songs, bringing out the Elmo voice, looking at rocks, finding caterpillars, and paying on a tennis court among other things. E. and S. it was great meeting you and hanging out with the boys for the morning!  Hope they enjoyed their dunkin donuts!!

A Quick PSA on Investing in Professional Photographers

**Author’s note:  I originally wrote this as a note on my Facebook biz page.  It was very well received so I decided to post it over here as well.  There have been a few tweaks added that I thought of after the fact**

Luckily, this has not happened to me – my clients are pretty darned great. It has, however, happened to several friends of mine, including another one very recently. What is “it”? Bargain hunters. Plain and simple, people who want to negotiate pricing.  Pricing of a session fee, or prints or packages.

When you use a professional service, do you bargain with them on the pricing? When you get a teeth cleaning do you tell the receptionist that you’d like to pay the amount the dentist down the street charges instead? With the plumber do you say that you can’t afford the entire repair and can you just pay for the drain snaking part? When you go to the clothing store do you tell the cashier that you would like to pay less than what the tag says?

Get what I’m trying to say?

If not, think of it this way. You work. You are paid a certain amount. What if your boss told you that they’d like you to do the same amount/caliber of work but they don’t want to pay all of the salary that was agreed on. Would you do it? I doubt it.

When you hire a photographer to do a session for you, they are no different than any other professional service out there. NO their prices are not negotiable. NO they will not price match Joe photographer down the street. NO they will not give you a special break afterward because you have realized that you can’t really afford them. Like every professional you would hire, know the pricing ahead of time and be willing to pay it if you hire them. It is rude and, honestly, insulting to ask someone to work for less than what they are advertised as. Whether they sell their 8×10 for $20 or $200 that is their pricing. That is THEIR salary. Please don’t insult them by trying to get them to give you their work for less. Photographers are professionals, too. 🙂

And a quick note about bartering because I have done this before and I thought of it after I initially published this.  I, personally, never mind when people approach me with bartering options.  (Example I have a future client whose husband will provide me with accounting services, or will when we finally set it up)  As long as it is a fair trade of service exchanged, that is the key part.  If there is something of value that you can offer then I don’t see a problem offering for something of equal value.  But again, don’t offer something that would be worth MUCH much less – that gets back to the insulting part.  (While we’re on the subject though, any local good massage therapists out there needing some photos??  😉 )

Fresh Bellies Casting Call! | Rhode Island Maternity photography

All spots booked, THANK YOU!!

Normally, photographers do what is called a “Fresh Faces” campaign or casting call when they want to change up the images on their site.  I personally like the faces that I currently have on my site 😉  I am okay with those adorable squishy, lovable, cute faces.  But what I am looking for some new shots of are bellies.  No, not beer bellies or flat athletic bellies (because those just make me jealous – the flat ones).  I am looking for gorgeous, round, glowing maternity bellies.  I have a few different display opportunities coming up and would like some fresh bellies – even though it is one of my favorite things to shoot, I don’t see nearly as many of them as I’d like.
