Fresh 48 Newborn Session | North Attleboro Photography

If you have been to Sturdy Memorial Hospital  to have a baby, chances are that you have seen my photos.  I have a lovely display of images all over the walls of the labor and delivery floor.  It is one of my favorite things that I have done in all of my years of being a newborn photographer in Rhode Island and Massachusetts!!  When dad, who worked at Sturdy, saw my images, he knew they wanted me to come for photos in their home after the baby was born since visitors were not yet allowed in the hospitals.  It wasn’t quite a newborn session, but it wasn’t quite a Fresh 48 either.  It was a gorgeous mix of the two.

Sweet Naya was just a few days old when I met her at their house.  We did all of the images right there in their nursery. It was essentially recreating the hospital room in a FAR more comfortable environment.  If I could, I would do so many of these sessions and call them “welcome home” sessions.  I could get all of the small brand new details – fingers, toes, wrinkles.  All of my favorite parts of the Fresh 48, but with the touches of the traditional newborn.  It really was the best of both worlds.

Rhode Island Fresh 48 Session | Rhode Island Newborn Photographer

There are many things I have missed during the pandemic.  Obviously the personal list is long and extensive.  But the business list side of things has a few as well.  And Fresh 48 hospital sessions is a major one.  Although some clients have still welcomed me into their homes for newborn and family sessions, no one controls what the hospital allows and doesn’t allow.  And obviously the safety of their patients is of the utmost importance.  So for well over a year now visitors have not been allowed on the hospital floors.  And one of the casualties has been the itty bitty teeny baby sessions.

So today to celebrate them being back / coming back, I finally (!) am blogging one of my favorite Fresh 48 sessions.  This one took place down in South County’s maternity ward which features amaaaazing rooms with lots of light and high ceilings.  Not all of the hospitals I am fortunate enough to shoot in have this setup but here it was perfect that day.  Although normally I do these sessions within the first 48 hours after birth, sometimes, we go a little longer.  Reasons might be a c-section mama just doesn’t feel quite up to it yet, or hospital rules, or a NICU stay or a bunch of other things.  For this session baby was just over 50 hours old but still a teeny new perfect peanut.

Often people will ask “why do a Fresh 48 if I am doing a newborn?”  Let me tell you – I adore the details I can get in Fresh 48s that I cannot get anywhere else  That super wrinkled skin fresh from amniotic fluid, the hospital bracelet, the umbilical clamp, hospital blankets and bassinets, fresh raw emotions from parents.  So many things are only there for those first few three or four days that will never be a part of them again.  That is why you do them.  That is why I love them.

You guys heard of that book – Love in the Time of Cholera?

Yup.  Although nothing similar to that story, that title sure feels like where we are right now.  A crazy worldwide pandemic that has basically stopped the world in its tracks.  Everyone staying home and staying safe to help contain the spread of anything further than it has already gone.  One thing that can’t stop, though?  Babies being born and children growing up.  But what CAN’T and ISN’T happening right now for the foreseeable future are the photography sessions capturing those moments.  In this series of posts here on the blog I am going to share with you some tips and tricks to help you photograph your own babies during this time.  Today I am talking about how to Photograph your own Fresh 48 sessions – the newest of the new!  For my post on Newborn Sessions click HERE and for my post on Baby’s First Year Milestone Sessions click HERE

Please realize as with learning anything else, your photos will not look like mine in the end.  I have been doing this for 13 years and have different equipment, knowledge, editing programs, etc.  HOWEVER, no one is able to get professional photos done at this point so ANY are better than none!!  I talk in my class that I teach how important it is to not miss the moments no matter your skill or knowledge level.  And these moments?  They’re definitely big ones.

the very beginning

Fresh 48 Session

Fresh 48 Sessions are those sessions done right after having the baby in the hospital.  Named Fresh 48 because normally they occur in the first 48 hours after birth.  These days I know some hospitals are trying to release patients earlier than that to get them home BUT these are photos that shouldn’t be skipped if you can help it / feel up to it.  There are so many tiny details in those first few hours that will never ever be the same.  Don’t miss out on them!  Below are my suggestions for how to photograph your Fresh 48 session.

Those first few hours and days after your baby is born go by in a blur – I should know because I’ve done it three times.  My memories from that period of time with each of my children are a bit fuzzy but I do remember being just absolutely overwhelmed with feelings of happiness and love (and yes, a bit of sleeplessness as well).  The baby there in the bassinet, the burrito swaddle magic that the L&D nurses could do in their sleep, that sweet newborn smell as I kissed their heads, seeing my husband hold our children…  I remember all of that.  I also remember how very quickly each baby changed.  Even in those first few days, they were so different – they seemed to change by the hours.  Fresh 48 sessions offer a way to document all of those moments for families – those very fresh new baby memories – after your labor and birth, but before a traditional newborn session.  While they are typically done within the first 24-48 hours, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that push it to third or fourth day.  Either way, it’s absolutely a beautiful way to document everything from those precious beginning days.

Thank you to Courtney and Josh for inviting me into their first few days with Logan…
