Maternity Session in Lincoln Woods | Rhode Island Maternity Photos

When Maya first reached out for maternity and newborn photos I had no idea how gorgeous all of it would be. We decided to do her maternity photos at Lincoln Woods park. It’s a great location because it offers a few different looks all in one spot. She showed up looking like a straight up maternity model. She wore a beautiful bodycon knit dress that showed off her belly perfectly! I always offer a maternity guide to all of my clients and have two super popular blog posts that are years old but still have relevant concepts. In there I talk about the difference between different styles and bodycon is one of my favorites!

We had a gorgeous October morning just as the leaves were changing. We also had the most beautiful light for our time together. We explored a few different areas to get a few different looks throughout the session. However, I think my favorite parts were by the stone wall and then Maya and Amanjot strolling through the trees by the picnic table. I always back off a bit to let couples have private conversations during maternity photos. It’s enough to have a giant camera pointed at you; to also have someone close enough to hear every single word is a bit much. But I have learned over the years that when I back off things are more natural. It’s more relaxed, and more intimate and frankly the photos look better.

All told we spent probably 45 minutes together doing photos and had such a fantastic time. One of the best parts was that they were also doing a newborn session! The maternity session really allowed me to get to know them, and them to get to know me and how I work. It makes the newborn session SO much easier when clients book a maternity, too. Plus why not have photos of both? 😉

Newborn Baby Girl | Lincoln Rhode Island Newborn Photography

You know when you meet someone and just immediately can feel how much they genuinely like each other and that they’re good people and you just really like them? That is what happened during the newborn session for this precious newborn girl at her family’s home in Lincoln. Penelope was just over two weeks old when I arrived at their house for their in-home session and she wasn’t quite ready for her big moment yet – totally normal. So I had the absolute pleasure of hanging out with her big sisters while we waited which meant I also snuck some big sister only images. A lot of the time (and I know this from my own experience as a mom) as you have more kids you get fewer individual kid time and photos! But then Penelope and mom and dad were ready so we started for real. It was a gorgeous morning so we took advantage of their beautiful back yard for some photos. One thing I love about going to clients’ homes – I can do that. If I like the backyard and it’s nice we can go outside and often do!

After we used their gorgeous front porch which resulted in one funny sibling photo that I still love, we headed indoors for most of the rest of the session. There is a reason I ask to see all of the house when I arrive to my newborn sessions. I would never have gone into the basement for photos if I hadn’t. But I did, and when I saw this GORGEOUS window seat and blue wall?? Yes please! Besides mom and dad’s room for some precious sister photos, and the living room for a few, the seat and window were the perfect backdrop for some timeless family images. You guys – remember what I said at the beginning? How you can tell when people genuinely love each other? SO obvious during these family photos. It was so much fun and happy and they were all in love with this sweet newborn girl. After capturing quite a few (read: a lot) of family images, it was Penelope’s big moment where she got to star in her own beanbag images with some swaddles. Check out those colors on her. I mean come on – could she be prettier??

Six Weeks New | Rhode Island Newborn Photographer

Too often clients looking for newborn sessions will be told by photographers that their baby needs to be under two weeks old. This session is going to show you just how unnecessary that actually is. For baby M we didn’t get to do her session until she was about six weeks of age. This was because mom and dad wanted to wait a little until she wasn’t quite so brand new. When they asked I said absolutely!! Never a problem 🙂 See, this is the advantage of storyteller / lifestyle sessions! It doesn’t matter how old the baby is – they’re still brand new to you and your family.

When I got to their house the first thing I did was see how ADORABLE she was!! It was hard to believe this was the same baby that had been in this belly just a few weeks prior. After that we took a look at the nursery – so pretty in shades of grey and terracotta (check out their adorable mobile!!). It went so beautifully with her skin tone and dark curls. M was awake for the beginning of her session – she didn’t want to miss a thing. And the eye contact I got during her awake time – oh my heart! I mean newborn adorableness AND eye contact?? Amazing.

We were still able to get such precious photos even though she wasn’t teeny tiny brand new. The best part of it was she was still new but not at the same time – she was calmer, she interacted more with her mom and dad, and everyone was sooo much more relaxed! She was still little, she was still new to this earth and she was perfect. Don’t let the older age worry you at ALL. And if you can’t find someone to take older newborns, come see me 😉

Weekapaug Inn Vacation Photo Session | RI Family Photographer

Going on vacation with your family is an exciting time for everyone involved; you create memories that last a lifetime. The G family has been coming to the Weekapaug Inn for a few years and when they were planning their vacation this past year, they knew they wanted to document their vacation with photos to look back on in the future. Mom reached out to a friend for recommendations, and they were pointed in my direction. I was so honored to be the one to capture their special moments together. (Make sure you check out the video at the end – one of my favorites I have ever made!)

Mom mentioned how the boys love to play chess in the lounge – even though they were too little to truly understand the strategy of it, it was a memory she had of them playing with the pieces over the years. So we started our session there – and their little fingers on the pieces and such a grown up game juxtaposed with them holding their lovies?? Got my mom heart big time. From there we took things outside. We began with a round of bocce on the court. The two young boys were eager to show off their skills and enjoyed having some friendly competition with mom and dad while I got a few photos to commemorate the moment. After that, it was time to get cozy! The family snuggled up in chairs on the lawn while I took candid shots that captured their love and affection for each other. As if that wasn’t enough excitement, we ramped things up with some walking and running and even dancing!

From there we headed to the beach. Because no trip to Weekapaug Inn in the summer would be complete without a stop at the beach. I photographed a maternity session there a few years ago and loved it so I was excited to get back. They grabbed a wagon and a football and off we went! So. Much. Fun. They ran in and out of the water, and jumped and twirled and told funny jokes and explored rocks and creatures. It was the perfect way to wrap up our time together.

Definitely, absolutely hands down if you want an iconic, gorgeous, relaxed family vacation, Weekapaug is the place to be. <3

Beach Maternity Session | Rhode Island Maternity Photographer

Beach maternity sessions take on all different looks depending on when and where you are doing them in Rhode Island. One of the things I pride myself on with my sessions is being able to customize them to my clients. Now for studio photographers that might mean doing a whole set and props etc. But for me, that means we make the session at the location of your choosing, on a day of your choosing (as long as it works) and in a style of your choosing. When mom and dad mentioned that they weren’t totally sure where to do their maternity session but were both kite surfers, I knew it had to be a beach maternity setting. Especially once they mentioned bringing the dog along. But which kind of beach?? Which worked the best?

We ended up on her suggestion settling on the Pheasant Hill beach in Portsmouth. If you’ve never been there it’s not the easiest place to find since it’s down through a neighborhood in a hidden drive. But once you get there you have gorgeous views of the Mt Hope bridge, the Hog Island Lighthouse and a beautiful rock-filled beach. It was the PERFECT location for them. Her tank dress and converse, his plaid shirt and jeans, it just worked so well against the beach setting. It was relaxed, natural, casual just like their session. We strolled the length of the beach getting the Mt Hope bridge in the background, got some images under a fun pier at one end of the beach, and even got a little different look going up on a walking path. On the beach it was very neutral and rocky, and on the walking path it was bushes and beautiful greens.

Combining all of these things with a gorgeous perfect belly made for a truly unique, truly them session.
