When Maya first reached out for maternity and newborn photos I had no idea how gorgeous all of it would be. We decided to do her maternity photos at Lincoln Woods park. It’s a great location because it offers a few different looks all in one spot. She showed up looking like a straight up maternity model. She wore a beautiful bodycon knit dress that showed off her belly perfectly! I always offer a maternity guide to all of my clients and have two super popular blog posts that are years old but still have relevant concepts. In there I talk about the difference between different styles and bodycon is one of my favorites!
We had a gorgeous October morning just as the leaves were changing. We also had the most beautiful light for our time together. We explored a few different areas to get a few different looks throughout the session. However, I think my favorite parts were by the stone wall and then Maya and Amanjot strolling through the trees by the picnic table. I always back off a bit to let couples have private conversations during maternity photos. It’s enough to have a giant camera pointed at you; to also have someone close enough to hear every single word is a bit much. But I have learned over the years that when I back off things are more natural. It’s more relaxed, and more intimate and frankly the photos look better.
All told we spent probably 45 minutes together doing photos and had such a fantastic time. One of the best parts was that they were also doing a newborn session! The maternity session really allowed me to get to know them, and them to get to know me and how I work. It makes the newborn session SO much easier when clients book a maternity, too. Plus why not have photos of both? 😉
Give me all of the snuggly, loving parents. Give me the single parent, the mom and dad, the two moms, the two dads. Big families with tons of siblings, first babies to come home. Love is love is love a million times over and that is what I live to capture for all of my clients. This newborn session was absolutely the perfect example of that. When mom reached out and said she and her wife wanted a newborn session in their home I was so excited. Especially, and I will be honest here, because they said I could share the images afterward. So often my LGBTQ families won’t let me share images – which I totally understand, but makes me sad. These two moms were ADORABLE and so so freaking funny. I remember laughing so much during their session.
Baby Madison was chubby and smily and pretty much perfect. She was a little different in that she was awake for most of the session which was awesome. It’s always an added bonus to get eyes open and sleeping images during a newborn session. It’s not something I normally TRY to get (that old adage about never waking a sleeping baby ) unless baby needs to eat but it’s a nice surprise when it happens. We were able to get such cute interaction shots – check out the nose boop below! We also got some adorable images with the newly promoted big fur sibling as well which was so awesome. I welcome all fur siblings as long as they are well trained – big animals plus tiny babies don’t always work. But this one was ADORABLE.
Towards the end Madison did drift off a little bit so it really ended up being the best of both worlds. <3

There are many things I have missed during the pandemic. Obviously the personal list is long and extensive. But the business list side of things has a few as well. And Fresh 48 hospital sessions is a major one. Although some clients have still welcomed me into their homes for newborn and family sessions, no one controls what the hospital allows and doesn’t allow. And obviously the safety of their patients is of the utmost importance. So for well over a year now visitors have not been allowed on the hospital floors. And one of the casualties has been the itty bitty teeny baby sessions.
So today to celebrate them being back / coming back, I finally (!) am blogging one of my favorite Fresh 48 sessions. This one took place down in South County’s maternity ward which features amaaaazing rooms with lots of light and high ceilings. Not all of the hospitals I am fortunate enough to shoot in have this setup but here it was perfect that day. Although normally I do these sessions within the first 48 hours after birth, sometimes, we go a little longer. Reasons might be a c-section mama just doesn’t feel quite up to it yet, or hospital rules, or a NICU stay or a bunch of other things. For this session baby was just over 50 hours old but still a teeny new perfect peanut.
Often people will ask “why do a Fresh 48 if I am doing a newborn?” Let me tell you – I adore the details I can get in Fresh 48s that I cannot get anywhere else That super wrinkled skin fresh from amniotic fluid, the hospital bracelet, the umbilical clamp, hospital blankets and bassinets, fresh raw emotions from parents. So many things are only there for those first few three or four days that will never be a part of them again. That is why you do them. That is why I love them.
