Sibling Newborn Session | Rhode Island Newborn Photographer

I have said before I love newborn sessions with siblings.  First babies are always fun but it’s no secret I adore the siblings.  And sometimes I extra adore the siblings when they are as awesome as this one was.  Being an older sibling, M was MORE than ready to show off her new little baby brother  She was so incredibly adoring and loving and sweet with him.  Even at their original consultation before the session, she was already excited about the baby so when I got there and she was getting to hold and snuggle him?  The BEST.  Mom and dad were also over the moon with their new baby boy (and I dont think I’ve ever seen a mini clone of a parent quite like this little guy hahaa!)

We spent a good time of their storyteller session capturing fun and beautiful family photos – even incuding one with one of the cats!!  I adore seeing how babies fit into family dynamics both literally and figuratively.  Finding the room to hold them in the family group photos while everyone else gathers around is so much fun.  I love the little squeezes and looks that can happen.  The sweet looks, the laughs, the pure love and joy in that family grouping.  The life of the family has changed so much in such a short period of time, and so so very completely that the emotions that come out are just the best.  After family photos it was time for solo baby cuteness.  I mean – the sleeping stuff was good but check out that face and those expressions he was giving me during some awake time as well!

Rhode Island Fresh 48 Session | Rhode Island Newborn Photographer

There are many things I have missed during the pandemic.  Obviously the personal list is long and extensive.  But the business list side of things has a few as well.  And Fresh 48 hospital sessions is a major one.  Although some clients have still welcomed me into their homes for newborn and family sessions, no one controls what the hospital allows and doesn’t allow.  And obviously the safety of their patients is of the utmost importance.  So for well over a year now visitors have not been allowed on the hospital floors.  And one of the casualties has been the itty bitty teeny baby sessions.

So today to celebrate them being back / coming back, I finally (!) am blogging one of my favorite Fresh 48 sessions.  This one took place down in South County’s maternity ward which features amaaaazing rooms with lots of light and high ceilings.  Not all of the hospitals I am fortunate enough to shoot in have this setup but here it was perfect that day.  Although normally I do these sessions within the first 48 hours after birth, sometimes, we go a little longer.  Reasons might be a c-section mama just doesn’t feel quite up to it yet, or hospital rules, or a NICU stay or a bunch of other things.  For this session baby was just over 50 hours old but still a teeny new perfect peanut.

Often people will ask “why do a Fresh 48 if I am doing a newborn?”  Let me tell you – I adore the details I can get in Fresh 48s that I cannot get anywhere else  That super wrinkled skin fresh from amniotic fluid, the hospital bracelet, the umbilical clamp, hospital blankets and bassinets, fresh raw emotions from parents.  So many things are only there for those first few three or four days that will never be a part of them again.  That is why you do them.  That is why I love them.

East Greenwich Newborn Session | Rhode Island Newborn Photography

It’s been a hot minute, so to pick up my backlog in blogging, let’s begin with the newborn session from the last post’s gooooorgeous maternity session.  This beautiful baby girl was so very ready for her closeup at just over two weeks old – and so were mom and dad.  They chose my classic newborn session so their session was much more posed in nature, but we still were able to get a wonderful variety of images.  Especially with the weather being gorgeous outside, we could even add in images outside under the trees in their front yard.  It’s one of my favorite bonuses when the weather is nice during newborn sessions – there is something fun and unexpected about taking everyone outside!  I will happily do images in yards, on benches, under trees, etc.  As long as there is pretty open shade I am good to go.

These two continued the fun and love and adoration for each other from their maternity session straight into their newborn.  They loved that little girl and each other so so very much.  You know when you can just tell how happy people are – when they radiate it?  That is what they did.  Whether I asked them to look at me (more common in the classic session) or give a kiss to someone, they were right there doing it eagerly.  I always joke it’s never hard to get new parents to give babies kisses and hugs and they were no exception.   🙂

I also want to take just a second to chat about their outfits – mom was absolutely stunning in a traditional cream colored tunic that allowed baby girl to shine.  And dad was perfect in a linen shirt.  Both outfits were great and definitely fell under the “what to wear for your newborn session” prompts.  Flattering, beautiful colors, and a cohesive look that let baby girl be the star of the show and didn’t distract.

Oh newborn photos.  How much I absolutely love love love doing them.  Without doubt, it’s my favorite type of session out of all that I offer.  There is just something special about the sessions.  It’s a brand new time in a family’s life that goes so quickly.

Mom contacted me after seeing one of my fusion videos that I make for my storyteller session clients.  She said she absolutely needed to have that.  They were welcoming their fourth child – and their first girl.  Three adorable, loving big brothers, so excited to meet her 🙂

We started the session in the master bedroom where I really love to do my images.  It’s comfortable and cozy and allows everyone to relax.  What’s more it’s almost always easy to throw a blanket over everything and pile on!  We did images of everyone together, as well as each sibling individually.  It’s so important to me to provide that one on one time with new siblings during newborn photos.  There is something really special about that new bond.  Usually they don’t get alone time with the new baby so I love what I can capture there.  I often even (if they’re old enough) kick mom and dad out while I work with them so the images are a complete surprise!

Later we headed outside as the weather was gorgeous that day.  I always take the chance to do images outside if I can!!  After that, we came back in and it was time for baby Nora to star in the show.  We chose a gorgeous pink blanket and wraps that complimented her coloring in order to do beautiful simple baby images.

The O Family reached out to me to schedule a newborn session. This was my first time working with them; I love gaining new clients! Mom and I talked about what they envisioned for newborn and family portraits. She loved the idea of an in-home newborn session. We also talked about possibly stepping outside for a few photos pending the weather that day. One of the perks of an in-home session is the possibility of some outdoor photos!
