I love meeting new families when I go to newborn sessions – and I don’t mean new clients, but rather new *families*.  It is one thing when you get married because you become an official “couple”.  But when you have your first baby, when you bring that little tiny being home with you, you have all of a sudden magically transformed from a couple into a family.   It’s especially awesome when I am chatting with the parents and I find out something like I did about baby G’s mom and dad – they’ve been together since mom was a freshman in high school!  It gets me all sappy emotional and happy inside when I meet couples like them because it’s REALLY a special turning point to grow from two to three after all those years.  Now I had already been looking forward to baby G’s birth for quite a while before he got here.  The reason?  He was a surprise gender baby!  I so rarely have that nowadays, it was really something different to wait for the excited email from my client, not only to tell me they had had the baby but whether it was a boy or a girl!  In this case it was a gorgeous, healthy baby boy.   So off I went for his newborn session this past Wednesday and oh what a great time I had!   Not only did I absolutely adore mom and dad (SO fun and those personalities you just click with within five minutes) but at ten days old, baby G was an amazing little sleeper and did a great job throughout.   A few personal favorite notes about these – newborn hands are difficult to shoot because they usually like to keep them in fists and close to their heads.  But in this session I got one of my favorite hand shots EVER.  And then the last shot — we did a photo with big fur brother and sister Brody and Daisy – Daisy was totally listening to her owners and holding the pose.  But Brody wanted some extra kisses while he was near the new baby and I kinda love it.  😉  Newborn boy on blue blanketNewborn on tan and cream blanketNewborn hands shot imageNewborn shot with dogs

When we moved to Rhode Island three years ago this June, the W. family was the very first shoot that I did.  I had come up two weekends prior to moving but they were my first as-a-resident shoot.  I remember very vividly that at our first shoot, my camera stopped working and i didn’t have my backup and I was *mortified*.  But they rolled with it, we met up again a week or so later and I had such a fun time.  If you’ve followed me for long enough, you might remember their shoot (seen HERE)  If you don’t, (re)meet the W family.  They are getting set to move to a new place in a different part of town and mom wanted to get some quick shots of the family just being a family there – some memories especially for big sister C who is having (understandably) a slightly harder time leaving the place she has known and loved.  Both of the children were home births as well so it’s a bit bittersweet for everyone to be leaving, literally, the home the children were born in.  We spent about an hour on Saturday morning getting some quick images of them all over the house in some favorite spots.  I love these.  And I am SO excited to see the new house and their next chapter!Family photo on a bedImage of mom with her daughtersPortrait of a little girl reading in her roomBeautiful black and white portrait of a little girlLittle girl on a porch swingBlack and white image of sisters sitting on stairs

Where to start on this sneak peek??  First, I’ll tell you – you’re going to be seeing a lot of this beautiful family in the next few months.  Newborn now, a family session this summer and then their wedding in September. So get used to them.  😉  A&M first found me when I did a newborn session for A’s sister back in January of 2011.  They became followers of my work and eventually contacted me to shoot their newborn in May and their wedding this fall on the Cape.  From the first email, I knew that I had found a really cool couple – or rather, they had found me.  I went out this past week when their daughter, Simi, was just 11 days old for their newborn session.  It was hours full of laughter and smiles and fun.   We had the bonus of one grandma visiting who got lots of extra snuggles in if Simi needed soothing AND got to do a few pictures with her daughter and granddaughter – how special!!   (Oh *and* we had two gorgeous dogs as well!)  Simi was an amazing sleeper and A&M are great with her already. She was just a perfect, beautiful baby who let me do pretty much whatever I wanted — I even got to use some new things I picked up.  I was able to get SO many different shots during this session, I am thrilled!  Hopefully they will be too.

When I lived and worked in Philadelphia, I was lucky enough to meet and become very good friends with Bernadette of Bernadette Uzcategui Photography.  We did trades on photos and she was one of the people I could swap stories with that understood where I was coming from.  We had many discussions over cookies and coffee and drinks over the years!   If you’ve followed my blog for a while you’ve definitely seen her with her adorable little family on here a few times.  I miss her dearly now that we are in RI.  But this past weekend when I was in Philly, we reconnected for dinner.  She and her husband are now expecting baby number two, a little girl, in a little over a month and she looks absolutely adorable!!  When we were at dinner we discussed meeting the next morning for some maternity photos before I left town.  In driving around the area near my hotel I had discovered this beautiful park with fields and a few neat little features.  So early the next morning she and her family picked me up and off we went.  It was a quick shoot, probably only 30-45 minutes but it was perfect.   Shooting for a fellow photographer is nerve wracking.  But shooting for a friend who is a photographer is amazing because I know I can do whatever I’d like and have total creative control.  And she gets what I am trying to do.  🙂  She is such a beautiful person inside and out and there is so much love in this family…I can only hope that it shines through here in this quick group of photos.On-location maternity photography with sibling. You may recall I went down to Philly for a maternity session and baby shower back in December (you can see those photos here).  This past weekend, it was time to go back down for the newborn.  Baby S was simply perfect and her family, beautiful.  That is about what it boils down to.  There are many more things I could say but I know mom and dad are super excited to see these so here are a few  🙂
